Shoes to go with a suit for residency interview?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Seriously? Black shoes.

No comment on black suit choice though.

I'll comment. Everyone will be wearing a black suit. Like a bunch of little black suit drones.

I wouldn't suggest buying an orange suit by any means, but a dark blue, gray, or dark pinstripe can look just as professional in just about any interview setting while giving you the chance to stand out from the black suit army.

So, I'm going to wear a medium-toned grey suit. What color shoes do I wear? Can I wear flats? Or do I need to wear heels?

No black suits; either dark gray or navy.

IMO: black cap-toe oxfords with either to be safe, or dark burgundy brogues with a conservative pattern with the navy suit.

IMO all black suits are only appropriate for funerals and weddings.

Navy or charcoal for IVs.

Your style may vary.

I've seen both flats and heels. I've always thought heels looked a bit more "interviewy", and maybe pick a pair that will allow you to walk without killing your feet.

As far as color, the "rules" are a bit more nuanced for the ladies . . . so I'll allow others to chime in on this one.

I should have elaborated, I mean lace up/slip on? I presume lace up is considered more formal?

If you own "dress shoes" that are slip-on, do yourself a favor and burn them so you don't accidentally wear them out in public.

That's all I wear on a day to day basis :-\

I wouldn't wear them to an interview, though.

This is the first time in all of the interviews I've been on that I've heard this about slip-on dress shoes. Is this a serious comment above?

I paid a hefty price for a pair recommended as "interview perfect" shoes sold at Nordstroms.

Looking for real/serious answers to this question as I'm about to buy a new pair.

Black slip on shoes are terrible as a rule and shouldn't even exist. Doubly so for interviews, but they are horrendous and a fashion mistake at any time.

Sorry you got swindled.

Are you kidding? Black suits are fine, if not expected, for job interviews. You are never supposed to wear a black suit to a wedding. It would be like a woman wearing a long solid white dress. You never want to look as formal as the bride or groom.

You did get the funeral one right, so 1/3 ain't bad.

Most weddings I've been to the groom is in full tux. Black suit isn't outclassing them.

Again your style "rules" may differ.

The black slip-ons I picked out for residency interviews:

Dress shoes have laces. Full stop. Slip ons are casual despite what anyone in medicine (or the sales guy at Nordstroms) might try and tell you.

Black suit? Common in medicine. Traditionally thought of as appropriate mostly for funerals and weddings but the rules on this have been relaxed over time.

Agree.

For Navy and Charcoal suits, I think burgundy cap toe oxfords or wingtips are the way to go. I bought a navy suit and a charcoal suit, but I also went on an absurd number of interviews. Better safe than sorry.

The AE black park aves above are a solid, conservative choice.

Wrong on so many levels.

Seriously though, I have a pair of brown Allen Edmonds Strands and a pair of black Park Avenues that I will use for interviews.
