My health insurance wont kick in as a resident unitil August. It seems like New York State doesnt have any short term insurance companies (hmmmmm why?) Anyone know any short term insurance plans that work in New York? Dont say Fortis, every website took me back to that company and they dont have a plan in NY. - Thanks

hey lucas,

not sure if this is an option for you but many medical schools offer their grads an option to extend their current health insurance for a few weeks/months after graduation (and before starting residency). for some odd reason, med schools don't publicize this. hope this helps.... 🙂

Look into a catastrophic plan. I know that the AMA offers one. I bought it when my insurance lapsed between med school and residency. Catastrophic plans are good for this because they are fairly cheap since they have a high deductible (often ~20 grand). While on this you won't be going to any primary docs but if you get hit by a bus you'll be covered.
