There has been such a dearth of communication from schools that I'm starting to get really worried. I've not been asked for any supplementals yet (I've only done UMN and Penn's since their's were readily available to me) and received "Complete" emails from some schools 2-4 weeks ago and others not at all. I have received one unusually fast interview from Case, but haven't heard a peep since then (2 weeks ago).

I'm only worried because it seems that others who submitted around the same time as me (mid August) already have numerous interviews.

All the schools I applied to are in my Pre-Dents profile. I know that USC, Tufts and Columbia are lost causes. I'm wondering if Temple is as well. They said my app was complete on 8/30th but never sent me a request for a supplemental. I've called their office a few times to ask for the supplemental but still they haven't sent it to me.

Just starting to freak out a bit. Is it because I'm an international student? What am I doing wrong or what haven't I done?

Cheers for any help or advice in advance.

I think we all need to be more patient. I'm worried too but what can I do? If you've sent emails to the schools asking for their thoughts on your application, thats about all you can do. I'm in the same boat; one interview and a few supplemental. All your stats look great so I wouldn't worry too much. Go hang out at the bar; that'll relieve some stress 🙂

Im curious as to why USC is a lost cause? And Tufts? Have they not enrolled Canadians/internationals for a while? I'm in the same boat, from Canada, not hearing much. But at least you've done one interview, I'm sure others are coming. I'm hoping the same...I would really start worrying mid-October. I think being an international definitely puts us at a disadvantage but what can ya do. Also, I think the fact you applied in August means those who have gotten interviews already were probably in the June/July piles. There's still time..

Hey cleanup, my stuff was mailed on august 26, I have received four interviews so far, I will give more detail on why I think this, sorry I am writing from iPod in class. No worries your in good shape.

I don't think you should worry for now, the people in the August 12 batch (including mine) have only started to hear back from the schools.

It seems like USC, even though it's a private school, accepts most of their applicants in-state. Tufts hasn't accepted Canadians for a while now. I think there was a thread on this a while back. These two are extremely expensive and I'm guessing they have had bad experiences with Canadians not having enough funding.

If you are American, you can get pretty much unlimited loans (at around 9%) to fund your education. These are the Stafford Loans and the Grad plus loans. For Canadians, we rely on our banks, which gives a maximum of 200k (at 3% interest). 200k will probably only cover 2 years at USC or Tufts, and if the Canadian applicant can't get enough funding, they are forced to withdrawal.

I'm not sure about Columbia, but I have not received an interview invitation from them. Maybe Columbia hasn't gotten to my file yet? I called them to ask them if they granted interviews to Canadians last week, and they said they did, so maybe we should wait a bit longer...

2 things are against you:

1 - international status
2 - asian ethnicity (i am not the author of this notion; but they're multiple threads about how some schools take very little asians.)

all in all just wait and see what happens, dont freak out. you got 1 interview and you're stats are amazing, nail it and you'll be fine. either way I believe the stats are in your favor, Case only interviews 8 or 9% of their applicants, but they accept like 80% of those applicants. so just nail that interview and i think you're pretty much accepted.

It's people like you who worry me! 😳 My earliest mail-out date was Aug 19, and I've only received the one interview so far. Which schools have invited you so far, if you don't mind me asking? My only solace is that I only see a few interviews from the schools I haven't heard back from yet. Most seem to be from state schools that I am not applying to.

I am well aware of the first reason, and I respect it. The second one irks me. Never before in academic applications have I ever had to denote my race or ethnicity. Granted, they may be able to guess from my last name (though there are European folks with my last name; it's a bit ambiguous), but the fact that my ethnic origins, who I was born as, may affect my chances of becoming a dentist, is a bit disconcerting.

I did notice that about Case; I do know that the 80% only arises because they take a lot of people off of the waitlist, however, so I imagine it would take a while to accept that very last applicant. Hopefully I'm in the class from the get-go! My friend interviewed there last week and thought it was a great campus and school. I'm excited to go.

Thanks for the encouraging words everyone; it's just that with each passing day and an inbox with emails only from people here in Toronto, it gets harder and harder to wait it out!

[Edit] And yes, it is to the best of my knowledge that USC, Tufts as well as Columbia have not historically accepted many (if any) Canadians in the last decade or so. I doubt the pattern is to change any time soon. I feel a bit robbed of my money, with these schools advertising that the Canadian DAT is accepted and international applicants are welcome; who knew we would be held to a non-existant, unreachable standard?

We asians are 5% of the population, yet we're a huge chunk of healthcare and sciences. If anything, we're over-represented...so being asian works against us. Lame, but we're all dealt with different cards. We just have to work with what we have.
