so today I was playing basketball at a local park around 10:30 pm, it was dark and most of the lights were already turned off, i was about to leave when a cop drove into the court and told me that its too late and asked for my id, he took all my info and wrote it up on some paper, before he left I asked him if I am in trouble and if something is going into my record and he said not to worry about anything and that he is just writing it up for his log...

so my question is weather I should be worried about this somehow coming back to hurt me? i feel like its nothing since i didn't get arrested and I wasn't told anything else by the cop, but i am kind of paranoid

any suggestions on what I should do or just forget about it?

P.S. as a side not, this is my first time i have a run in with the law, never even talked to any cop at all before

Unless you didn't do anything wrong, I don't think there's a problem. What's wrong with that cop anyway?

I'm gonna answer your question by asking you a question...if you were on the adcom of a medical school and you came across a great application but it came to your attention that the student was told to go home after playing basketball in the park past 10:30 would you be concerned?

i am more paranoid then concerned i guess...this happened in philly, the cop thought we were up to no good i guess, the area is full of people smoking pot and such

what part of philly

cops in philly are pretty annoying though no lies. worst is the parking "police"

... seriously, if there's no ticket, no court date, there's no problem. The cops can't just open up your file and write stuff in it without you getting the chance to argue with it.

Read the constitution sometime, your rights are pretty awesome.

thx for the quick response guys...

brooklynblunder it was in northeast philly

Adcom at interview: "You mean you were playing basketball after dark!!! You are definitely not med school material! How dare you insult us... you... you delinquent you. GTFO!"

Some of you are waaaaay to paranoid and make it sound as if you grew up in a very sheltered life. 😛

it's better if you flee the country now

I'd just question why the hell he wrote my info down, but otherwise you have nothing to worry about.
I've never heard of playing B-ball after dark going on the criminal record, unless you are leaving some details out.
Like you shoplifted a store at 10, and then went to play b-ball.

there are no other details, he just said park is closed at night and its illegal for me to be there

No, what the cop was ACTUALLY trying to do was take your information to apply to med school, since he hadn't done so well on his extra-curriculars. Tough luck, you just got app-rolled into giving your application information to some SDN lurker cop with <20 MCAT and <2.0 GPA

it's the end of the month dude... cops are just trying to reach their quota right now. You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. it's not going on your record. the only thing the cop is gonna do is show his boss that he was actually patrolling at 10:30pm instead of hitting up the krispy kreme down the street.

there are no other details, he just said park is closed at night and its illegal for me to be there

it is standard for public parks to close at dusk. there is no secrecy surrounding this, there almost always are signs posted at the park entrances that state that the park is closed at dusk. the cop took your name for two reasons: 1) in the event that something went down at the park that night (an assault or robbery or sth along those lines), the police would be able to contact you as a "person of interest", and 2) in the event you are contacted inside the park after hours in the future, you likely will be given a trespass notice (or issued an infraction or even a misdemeanor), because at the first contact you were put on notice that it is illegal to be in the park after hours

it is unlikely to affect you adversely in the med school process unless you are caught in the park after hours a second time

there are definitely no signs there and if there were any I am sure they would have been already vandalized and destroyed...

I had no idea that was the law, I have been playing there basically for the past 5 years or so and absolutely no problems

the more i think about it the more i am convinced that this will have no effect, i was just freaking out cause it just happened

on campus i have gotten used to playing ball for 2 hours or so at the gym at nights before going to sleep, but during the summer I am at home and don't have a gym membership so I just play with my friends at a local basketball court
so two reasons why I play this late.
1) I am used to playing right before i go to sleep
2) my high school friends have really weird job schedules so this is the best time that we can meet up to play
