aka What are my chances at DO schools?
3.6 GPA 27 MCAT (10/10/7).

One publication

URM

A little hospital volunteering

One very strong rec, one strong one, and one good one

What do y'all think? Thanks!

Looks good to me! Ecs are decent and grades are good. Publication is great.

Stat wise, you have a strong chance at pretty much all schools considering your URM status imo. Just avoid the instate biased ones. Do you have any shadowing or a DO letter? It may be difficult, but I would recommend some shadowing and snagging one in like a month or two if you can. I was able to do it because I had strong connections. I feel like your lack of clinical ECs would make it difficult to convince ADCOM you are familiar with and are interested in osteopathic medicine.

Haha. I'm hoping this was a Vacation reference.

(For those of you who haven't appreciated the greatness. 3:36)

Depending on what type of URM you are, you also have a good shot at MD schools as well with your application.

Wow I didn't expect the positive comments. Which DO schools are the instate biased ones? @hyperDO what is the minimum amount of DO shadowing I can do to get a decent letter? I was hoping to submit my apps next weekend...

Hey! I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject but here is a relatively recent link: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/do-schools-with-regional-bias.882708/

Many people get letters of rec after a few weeks of shadowing, there is no real requirement. As long as the doc agrees to write a strong one. If you work hard on finding a doc I think it would be very reasonable for you to get one by the time secondaries arrive. If anything else the shadowing experience is probably the most efficient use of your time considering how soon you plan to apply.

Thanks man, very helpful reply.

What community do you represent? And please don't say "Brooklyn".

Not all Latinos are URM, either.

Stats are fine for any DO school, URM or no.

The OPs great-great grand parent was a Native Alaskan (from his other thread).

Honestly, what's up with making a ton of threads asking the same thing, yet providing insufficient details to warrant any advise in all of them. Make one thread in WAMC forum and include more than 3 lines about yourself.

How many DO schools should I apply to so that I will probably get at least one acceptance? I was planning on about 10. Is that good? (Assuming no URM)

Seriously? are you being sarcastic? What about my total lack of extracurricular activities and community service?

As the wise Goro says, Stats get you to the door, EC's get you through the door. With no DO LoR, no shadowing, barely any volunteering or clinical experience. I think your chances of opening that door are slim to none. Especially when you consider that many applicants have better statistics AND all of the above.

So how can the opinion go from "yes you have a great shot" to "slim to none"? Wtf?

I agree with the bolded statement. Otherwise, good stats.

Also, how much hours did you volunteered at the hospital? "little" can be any positive integer.

You could spend less time making these threads and more out there getting some ECs under your belt. Take a year and volunteer your heart out. Get a job as a patient care tech or a scribe or anything else that gets you into the clinical environment.

It isn't a numbers game. There isn't a magic number to apply to in order to be assured of at least 1 acceptance, no matter what your stats and app looks like. Those are just clues to who you are. Even if you land 10 interviews, if you show up at all of them with your foot in your mouth, you aren't getting in anywhere.

I only completed 1 secondary and got in. There is someone out there who applied to almost every DO school, with better stats and ECs than you, who didn't get a seat their first cycle.

If you have money and time to waste, by all means, go ahead and apply with such minimal clinical exposure and volunteering. Some school might take you, but more likely, you will end up having to make another run at it next time around, hopefully with more ECs. Or, save the application fees and heartbreak this time, strengthen your app, and make your first application attempt your best application attempt. It is so much better to only do it once.

Did you get a DO letter yet or are you still trying to skirt around that (I remember this was a question on one of your other numerous posts)?

And pleas, for the sake of all of our sanity, make 1 post on WAMC, listing all you ECs, stats, etc so we can give you concise answers in one thread
