Should I buy this?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
do you "need" it? No

Is it extremely helpful? Yes

I rec. you buy it. It will make your app. process a lot easier.

most advising offices have at least one on hand, usually more. you can photocopy if you need to, or get a used one (recent as possible!) online.

The MSAR is extremely useful. However, it's not really that helpful until you've started seriously getting into the application season. I bought mine a year ago and haven't opened it yet. I've had no need to (I'll be applying in the summer).

Unless you're just wanting it for some reason 🙂confused🙂, I'd wait so that when you need it you have recent data.

I think the only thing it's useful for early on is maybe the prereqs of all the schools, but you could easily get that online. I've had a copy for a while and I've found it fairly useful - I'll be applying in the summer too.

Thanks, one follow-up question.

Are they (or are they usually) going to release a different one from now until this June?

I am going to be applying this June, so if it is going to be the same one, then I should just get it now.

The 2010-2011 version is, I believe, the most recent version that'll be available. Not sure though.

A year's difference probably won't be a big deal. My warning was more if you were a freshman or in high school.

As far as an online source for the data... you can always use google for much of it. A lot of the same data can also be found in the more or less abandoned med school spreadsheet project...assuming you can find someone willing to give you the xls file....

Awesome, thanks again.

Purchased!

The new edition for each cycle is released every April. The current edition right now is from April of last year so it would have been for those who are getting acceptances right now. If you're applying this June you probably should have pre-ordered the edition that's going to be released in April of this year, but the information between two consecutive editions is pretty similar anyway.

The public library has it as a reference...it is the previous years but the data does not change dramatically from year to year. I would not buy it between all the money that you have to spend this is a luxury.

Fair enough. I was able to cancel my order from yesterday.

For now, I am going to see my school career center for it then contemplating the purchase in April.

One of the associates also told me that "We will start accepting orders for the new edition in early April."
