This is for all the single dental sctudents out here. I'm 23 years old and will be moving to the big city this coming August. Do you guys think I should get a room mate to cut living expenses. I've figured it's about 17,000 if I am very far on the high side. It should be significantly less than this, but with a room mate I could probably cut at least 6,000 off this. Is it worth the hassle. I mean at the end I'll probably end up with student loans around 220 - 230 thousand so will this end up making such a huge dent.

The only think I'm worried about is if I end up with some joker who doesn't pay his half of the bills or steals my stuff or someone I just find out I really don't get along with and then I'm stuck with them.

Choosing roommates is like playing russian roulette. I've had my share of bad roommates so i'm also very apprehensive about getting a roommate. But if I don't, it might cost me 1600 a month to live alone. I've seen people get really close to their roommates and even become best friends. I have yet to have that happen for me. The best thing I can suggest is to talk to them on the phone prior to committing. Talk about your rules and expectations from the start so you don't have TOO many surprises down the line.

I've been lucky to have had great roommates in the past. I'm hugely pro getting housemates in dschool. You wanna live as frugally as possible during these next four years.

Get your own place first year. You'll have that year to meet with classmates and find someone who's on the same wavelength as you. Roommates indeed are Russian Roulette, paying a little more for 1 year is far more reasonable than having some psycho live with you and make a year of professional school hell.

How about trying to connect with someone in your class through Facebook (like through the class page)? Sure, you're taking your chances, but you at least know they're not some kind of serial killer/criminal and that they are responsible. They made it into dental school - that has to be worth something. 🙂

Get a roommate for sure, just use discretion when picking one. I am living with someone from my class (never met him before school) Most health/professional students are legit.

I think the biggest problem for me in choosing roommates was that none of them were determined as I was. Hence, they were always hanging out while I was busy with E.C.s and studying. Naturally, we just stopped hanging out altogether and there was no chemistry b/w myself and my roommates. Hopefully, like you said, I will find someone who shares similar values and ideals.
