I am looking at the application to be a fellow in AAFP, and it really isn't that much. 100 pts and 6 years (both resident and active) in AAFP.

Is this another ploy to get $175 and to spend money on conferences sponsored by AAFP?

I don't see how this helps other than advertising myself or putting another line in my resume

Am I missing anything here?

The real point of it is what it means to you. IMO, it shows that you've gone above and beyond what is minimally required for practice, not unlike NCQA certification.

This extra effort does set you apart from the herd a bit, although most laypeople (and even many other physicians) don't really know what it means.

If you're in academics or a leadership position, you'll likely be in the company of other fellows. Lack of the degree could appear a bit awkward.
