My college is offering a hybrid version this fall: large lectures online, workshops/labs in person, everything else socially distanced. No volunteering in hospital, no ug research, socially distanced clubs. Only thing is i have a minor leadership position in reslife that may benefit my resume that i will have to give up if i don't go back. Additionally, my parents have underlying conditions, and I'm very paranoid, so if I go I plan to stay the entire year/until cases drop dramatically. However, i'm taking organic and genetics and am scared if I don't go back and go to in-person workshops, I'll have a lower quality of education.

tl;dr: should I go back to campus (wasting money on housing) for a small chance at improving my resume? will the on-campus experience be worth it?

Your resume isn’t reasonably enhanced by a year of reslife or club activities, so I would ignore that part. It comes down to academics and risk of transmission. You have to balance the risks and benefits of going back to school: workshops for more challenging classes vs need to remain distanced from family with underlying health conditions. If you can perform well academically without in person support, that makes the decision a bit clearer. If not, then it is a tough choice. One thing I want to add is that medical schools aren’t going anywhere. There is no need to rush.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I don't think I can take a gap year. I'm not sure if I will need in-person workshops or not, but I know they would be better than online. Plus my EMT and TA classes require me to be on campus. God, I don't know what to do 🙁 this whole situation is insane :/ I think I will have to go back and stay for who knows how long

A harsh truth: Your health is more important than your education or your med school app right now.

how about mental health? some kids needs social engaging (even it's just with roommates) and don't want to be "stuck" with work from home parents.
