Should I go to a school in a state where I want to stay later on?

Do most people relocate to find jobs upon graduation or do most stay in the states where they went to opt school?

I like SCO's low tuition and living costs as well as the clinical program. However I don't see myself living in Memphis... Is it a common act for people to go to any school and find jobs else where, or are there certain advantages of attending the school at where you want to be practicing (alumni connections? employer's preference?)

The immediate areas right around OD schools tend to be over-saturated with optometrists. Some of my classmates are planning on staying here, but most of us are going elsewhere after graduation. It really doesn't matter. I'm getting the heck out of Memphis when I'm done. 😀

I believe that there are more opportunities elsewhere.

I do not believe there are any direct advantages to living in the same state as where you attend school. Many students come from different states, and they go to different states (after school)

I was woried about possibly practicing in a different state than where I attend optometry school and was wondering if it is difficult to take the board in more than one state? Aren't we taking the exam during our optomety school years? How does this work? and is it a difficult process? Thank you!

Kind regards 🙂

Generally, I feel that the optometry schools target a particular state's board examination for their curriculum. Rather, if there is any tailoring of a curriculum, it is towards the National Boards.

In my opinion, I would take 3 state licensing examinations because it is extremely difficult to take the license examination later on.

No, you're taking NATIONAL boards during school. After graduation is when you take state boards, and not all states even have a test so it depends on where you're going. if you go to optometry.org I think they have the info on there about the requirements for each state.

Most require you pass a law exam.

That's true. I think there are like 7-8 states that have nothing, though. The state I'm going to practice in is one of them. 😀
