I just received an interview offer at Hong Kong university for their medical school program. I am originally from Hong Kong and want to practice in HK when I become a doctor. So far I got into SUNY Downstate, but I am a bit reserve about going there because of its environment. Should I make the trip to HK for this interview?

Also, I would have to redo my undergrad in HK since their medical program is combined with their undergrad program. That means 6 years of school and one year of residence.

Is it possible to get your medical education in the States and then practice in HK? What's involved in making the transistion to practice in HK if you go to Downstate to get your MD?

Off the top of my head, I would say that if its rather easy to transfer over there with a MD from the US, then go to Downstate. At least this way you have the option of staying in the States to practice should you ever change your mind about practicing in Hong Kong. I would go to the interview though to check it out if you are really interested.

Thanks for your advice, I greatly appreciate it. 🙂

I think if I get a MD here, I can do several years of residence in HK, take a licencing exam and practice in HK.
Normally, I would fly to HK for the interview anyways, but with the SARS situation, I don't know if I want to take the risk.

Thanks alot!

WHO just rescinded their travel advisor for hong kong.

i'd say just go there and check it out. you're already in a med school so you have nothing to lose to get more information.

having to repeat undergrad kinda is a drag, IMO. I think getting the MD in the US will give you the most flexibility, but again, you should find out more from the Hong Kong program if possible.

good luck!

Wow Patricia, way to go. HKU is the top med program in HK.

Go have a look-see. It sounds like you're in a win-win situation. If you decide to come back to the states after HKU, my guess is that it shouldn't be too hard. You'll have to do residency here too but as you might know there are so many spots in the US.

best of luck,

If you're really interested in practicing in HK anyway, by all means go. It's always somewhat easier (not impossible, just less of a pain) when trained in the same country. Good luck!

btw, alpha omega alpha's magazine (The Pharos?) recently had a cover story on the HK medical system. It should be an interesting read for you, if you can get a hold of a copy. 🙂 Or maybe you can do a search and see if it's published online.
