I recently received an interview invite to DMU. It was the first interview invite I've gotten!!

However, I'm a Jersey girl who'd like to stay on the east coast. I've heard from UMDNJ-SOM and they want to interview me in the next few weeks, but I have not heard from PCOM and NYCOM yet, which are my other top choices.

my stats are a 27R MCAT and a 3.6 GPA.

Do you think it's worth it for me to fly out to Iowa to interview?? I'm really not sure if I should fly out there or hold off for the other schools. I need to let DMU know if I'm comming by Friday.

Thanks!

I would go to it.

The reason being that you might want some experience before interviewing at UMDNJ-SOM if it's your first choice school. Plus, you're not guaranteed slots anywhere, so I would interview everywhere until you got an acceptance. Then you can be more picky about where you go. If cost is an issue, then maybe you could consider not going, but otherwise I would be there. Good luck to ya!

you're probably right. I know if I don't go, murphy's law will apply and I won't get an interview anywhere else!!! And I suppose it is good practice for my UMDNJ-SOM interview. I just don't know what I'm going to say when they ask "why Iowa?" 😕 <-(me at the interview)

Why apply somewhere if you don't want to go there? I think your questions about going to interview might reflect your attitude of the school. I mean, what would you do if you interviewed at Iowa and only got accepted there? Would you be happy?

well, I took the Aug MCAT so I basically applied everywhere because I didn't know what my scores would be.

It's true, DMU is definately not my first choice, not because it's a bad school or anything, but like I said, I would prefer to stay on the east coast!

Ideally, I would like to go to PCOM or UMDNJ-SOM and I would be absolutely extatic about getting into either of those schools.

I think I would be a little disappointed if I got into DMU and not my top choices, but I don't think that disappointment would even compare to how I would feel if I didn't get in anywhere!

go to every interview you get! not that you are desparate with stats like yours you are certainly competitive. but you should go to the campus and feel it out. evey campus is different, it may suprise you and you may be really want to go there. 4 years of med school is a huge emotional and financial investment, dont make you decision without seeing all your options first. good luck!

I think that's good advice, H.L. butter. Maybe I'll love it out there! I sure would miss the smog and good pizza though...

I just talked to my dad and he's gonna send me out to Iowa on his sky miles.

woo-hoo!

I say go for it. It is costly but it will be pennies in the bucket compared to how much you will spend on your education. I think you will join me at UMDNJ next year but for now it doesn't hurt to explore. I'm going to PCOM and NYCOM this month to explore even though I am rather set on UMDNJ. If there is one thing I have learned from this whole process it is that there are some things you can learn about a school only by being there. Good luck to you!

I agree with Nate. I went to 4 of my 6 interviews and after going to those 4 my idealistic school preference has changed. My #1 has gone to #3 and the two schools that were #2 & #3 at first are now tied for #1. Hopefully there will be another school in the future that will be an overall decision factor/maker, but I won't know until I go and see. And just to let you know, I applied to DMU after I panicked that my scores were bad, but now it's one of the ones tied for #1...funny how things work.

Everyone says Go Go Go,.. I say $ $ $. I guess if money isnt an issue, than yeah, GO. GOOD LUCK!!

I would say go...but if you are not positive that you want to go to this interview why not ask if you can schedule it a little later? If it is later, you are bidding yourself a bit of time to see if the schools that are higher up on your priority list are interested in you.

I think you should go. Try to reschedule your interview for later if you want to.
I went to DMU not knowing much about the school, but they really impressed me. The facilities are awesome, the people are incredibly nice, the OMM department is stellar. I've been accepted to three schools now, and I would probably choose DMU if I hadn't been accepted into my state school here.

Go to all interviews until you get an acceptance. If it's not a high choice for you then continue to go until you get something better. I went to all my interviews until I got an acceptance, once this happened I promptly cancelled all interviews at schools I was not that excited about. I did this primarily to save money. Your goal is to be a doctor, and whether that becomes a reality in NY or Iowa is just a detail. Just my opinion

I'd say GO! You can't really lose anything. You may even love the school and the place. I talked to a number of students who weren't even seriously considering DMU (unless they didn't get in at their other school of choice) until they interviewed there. That is where they ended up. I'm exactly that sort of person. It was low on my list until I visited and now it is in the top 3.

I am from central NJ and applied to many schools since I took the August MCAT. I would ideally like to go to PCOM or UMDNJ-SOM, but I don't want to limit myself and not go for an interview at DMU. I am going on the 16th of November for my interview, does anyone know how long you have to reply if they do accept you?!?

You have until Dec. 15th to put $500 down towards your $1000 holding fee.
