I've made numerous posts on here before, but more recently I'm starting to research and focus on which programs (curriculum/location/costs/residency match/etc) are in my top choice and now I'm thinking I may not be competitive enough for them. Looking at stats from this cycle, the increased amount of applications, people not getting IIs with better stats than me, people getting rejected pre-II, post-interview, etc... I'm acting like a basic neurotic pre-med and feel like I need to somehow beef up my application before 2016-2017 cycle, but I don't know where to pool my energy.

I really would like to MOVE BACK TO the Northeast (grew up & went to college there) .... so 1) Tuoros-NY 2) PCOM 3) NYIT 4) Rowan 5) UNECOM, but will also be applying to a few others.

Current Stats:
uGPA 3.3 sGPA: 3.4 MCAT: April/May 2016
~100 hours of clinical volunteering by the time I apply
~Shadowing starts this month, so possibly ~50-100 hrs by June
~Passionate ECs non-clinical. I think they're good enough & unique, not cookie cutter. Should make me stand out
-My PS will definitely not be cookie cutter.

My current Situation:
I'm currently taking the UNE Biochemistry class and have a 95% (5 weeks in), also doing MCAT content review on Khanacademy.org as it correlates to biochemistry. I spend most weekday evenings & maybe 5-10 hours on the weekend studying/reviewing. I also work ~20 hrs a week. I am planning on studying really hard from Feb-April on the MCAT, since my biochem class ends in Jan. However, it has been a long time (4-5 years) since I've taken Bio I & II, Physics I, Chem I, so I have a lot of content review to do.

So I kind of have 3 options right now:

1) Focus on MCAT, but also try to bump my GPA up over spring/summer/fall, but my MCAT might not get as much time devoted to it if I take spring classes.

2) Focus on the MCAT hard and really try to get a high score for DO >32/511

3) Focus hard on the MCAT now, try my best, and sign up for summer & fall 2016 classes, and update admissions at the end of summer & end of fall 2016 (would this be too late for GPA repair?)

The classes I would need to re-take are:

Geographic Information Systems: C
Financial Accounting: C
Sociology: W (I withdrew for medical reasons)
I'd probably also sign up for some additional classes I have yet to take to improve GPA further.

Geographic Information Systems and Financial Accounting won't count towards your sGPA, so retaking them wouldn't help as much as if they were science classes. Do re-take Sociology. As far as MCAT vs GPA works, both your GPAs are above 3.25. Some schools pre-screen GPAs under 3.25. I would focus on the MCAT and absolutely rock it. Good luck! This was my general though process, and if anyone wants to provide feedback on this, I'm sure OP would appreciate it.

I would not take the MCAT until you are absolutely positive you can get a competitive score... around a 509. If you have a good MCAT I think you will be fine with those stats. I am in a similar situation (I have a 3.4 with some F's on my transcript from freshman year) and I have been advised that it is not necessary to retake those classes so I am going to spend my time studying for the MCAT. The only class I would retake if I were you is sociology just to make sure you are above a 3.2 so you don't get screened out.

For ECs, The average applicant at my school had 200+ hrs volunteering, 80-100 hours shadowing, one research experience, three leadership experiences, and a fair amount of patient exposure hours. If you are competitive with your ECs and submit a well written personal statement I think you will have a good shot! Good Luck!

Raise GPA and get >90th percentile MCAT score.

A bit too much. As the others have stated, the GPAs are ok. Focus on the MCAT. Get the magic number of 500 or above and apply. (some schools state a min of 498 but... stay with the 500 to be safe)

Raise GPA and get >90th percentile MCAT score.

For DO this is really excessive. The GPAs are fine and a 60th percentile score will make them competative for any program. With those GPAs a 90th+ percentile MCAT would give them an ok shot at MD.

I'm not meaning to hijack this post, but I saw your reply and was wondering if you could give me your opinion on the classes below. Do you think they would all count towards my usGPA? Some subjects that were not included last year are included this year and it's really throwing me for a loop. I understand it's just your opinion, but any second opinion would be greatly appreciated!

ASTR 002 Origins of the Cosmos
BISC 012 Intro Bio - Bio of Organisms
ANTH 001 Biological Anthropology

FORS 104 Intro to Forensic Science
BISC 2451 History of Life
BISC 2452 Animal Behavior
ANTH 3401 Human Functional Anatomy

Thanks again!

Just looking at the titles, I think all would count towards your sGPA except for ANTH001. If I were you, I would just ask my undergraduate program if these go towards science GPA or not. Good luck!

Biological/physical anthropology counts as BCP-Other for your science gpa.
