Hi,

I have a very small scale business where I import children's toys from a manufacturer in China and sell them online here in the states. It seems like adcoms want to hear that everything you do is selfless or solely out of compassion, but I only really started to do it to be able to pay rent. Do you think this is worth mentioning on an application or in an interview? If not, do you think there is some way I can change the business in a way that will look better for an acceptance (like donating some of the money to charity or something of that nature)? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Adcoms want to hear about you. They don't sit around and try to figure out who is the most virtuous. Everyone sounds like a saint on their application. They want to fill their classes with people who are bright, capable, motivated, and have good values... but everyone applying has that. They also want to fill the class with a group of people who bring diverse, interesting experiences and skills.

Mention it. Don't harp on it. Don't try to relate it to health care somehow. Don't try to shoehorn some virtuous motivation into it. Just toss it in your activities or something.

100% agree.

Thanks for your help, that seems like the right thing to do. Also wanted to make sure it didn't come off as greedy in some way. I'll just treat it like another EC.

Sounds like you need this toy business since even with a working wife, you are still not raking in enough cash with your shoe shining business, selling CDs at the said business, and having a goverment job, OP?

I think showing that you can run even a small scale business is very valuable and would put it in your application. Business is essential to medicine; many physicians have the position of being a CEO of a hospital or a director of a medical group. I would consider any business experience a major asset.

Is this something that you think will add to your application? I guess it depends how significant it is...
If I bought and re-sold video games for a profit in a very small scale (3-5 a week) I probably wouldn't mention it... but if it was 500 video games a week, that's definitely something to add.

Add it, it is an interesting factoid that at least shows you are innovative.

Toy business, interesting. Thought you would try to become a children's television host, maybe call yourself Johnny Karate?

Do make sure that the toys you import are safe for children. Not all are...

Already got the ball rolling on that :cigar:
