Hi everyone-
I was on here 3 weeks ago posting about what to do about grades since my appendix ruptured. Since then I have had another surgery because the infection was not cleaned out completely. I am able to get 4 W's in place of my F's this semester due to this problem.
Last semester, I had a 2.2 gpa because my mother was diagnosed with cancer that was very hard to deal with and of course not adjusting to college too well yet either. Another note is that these were done at a community college because of financial issues.
The reasons I am thinking of quitting are these and:
1. I am going to have to start working full- time to pay off my medical bills since they are so high.
2. I think my biggest problem is my lack of self confidence. I have had people tell me I am not smart enough in the past and when people do say this to me I tend to believe it and can never erase it especially when I get an A- or B on an exam.

I really don't know what to do anymore. So I am looking for advice here.
Thanks.

If you want to be a doctor: don't quit. Stop letting other people decide how you think about yourself. That includes both letting them drag you down, and using outside sources for validation.

First of all, I'm sorry to hear about your mom and your struggles with your appendix. I hope everything works out. Stay strong man.

As far as quitting I'd say don't give up. Find some way to pay those bills through loans or something else (maybe set up a charity fund or ask the church for help if your religious. The point is you have to find a way) but don't give up school. It is your future. Life will have its set backs, but that's exactly what they are - set backs. It doesn't mean it's over and you toss in the towel right after the first round. Keep fighting. If you want to be a doctor go out and be one and don't let life or someone say otherwise. You're young with plenty of troubles and your study habits may not be fine tuned yet. There is still plenty of time to turn it around, get good grades and crush the MCAT. Don't get lost in the struggle. You got to rise up through hardships and chase your dreams. Whether its being a physician or not. Just don't give up. Good luck man.

You can do it! Everyone has problems but it's how you deal with those problems that counts. Your story has the potential to be a great one! Keep your head up and when people tell you that you aren't good enough...prove them wrong.......you can do this

Haha, you and me both.

Wife tried to kill herself last semester and I ended up with 2 B's and 2C's (plus working full time, yada yada). A few nights spent in the ICU/classes skipped and ignored during it, next thing you know, grades degraded (past drop date).

Anyway, I'm continuing with it, (she's okay now, getting counseling, etc) - and you need to as well.

You also sound younger than me (I'm 26). Take it from someone who started once, gave it up, and spent years regretting and wondering "what if."

That's not fun.

I wholeheartedly agree! This can make you a more compassionate person. If things seem this bad, you have so much more room to rise. It sounds like you are just finishing freshman year. You have plenty of time to turn your academics around. Schools look at trends, and will even forgive a terrible freshman year, even if they don't have a story (which you do!). As with the negative people around you...surround yourself with positive people that will assist you to your goal of being a physician. You will need everything you can muster within yourself, let alone keeping your spirits up in the company of others. You have plenty of time. 👍

Don't quit. if you are going to work full time, i would just take couple of classes per semester and make sure you get good grades in those. i started off college in the 2.0's gpa and pulled myself up. you can do this but you are gona have to bust your a** to bring up your gpa. you can explain your low gpa later in your app

I'll be the only one to say it: quit...for now.

Go work a job, go join the military, go get some maturity and some confidence. If you still want to become a doctor later or do something in school, college will still be around.
