GPA: 3.7 cumulative, 3.6 science

I applied late last year (secondaries in October) and got onto the alternate list at two schools (both out of state) after applying very broadly. I think I have solid letter writers and a good essay. I have shadowing experience while in college (2 summers), volunteering at a local hospital (1 year), and a decent set of extracirriculars (music, sports). I started a full-time clinical research assistant position right when I applied. Since then I have 2 publications (second author on one).

Should I reapply this cycle? I would need to submit my primary asap and apply very broadly again. Any suggestions for improving my app/CV? Would a masters be appropriate before reapplying?

Feel free to be harsh

No need to be harsh. I think you applied too late. Your MCAT is good and your GPA is good. Was your essay good and interesting or was it a rehash of your volunteer work. There is NO REASON why you didn't get in. You should have your app submitted as of June 1st and applied where you would be most likely be accepted. You would be accepted DO almost definitely.

My essay talked mostly about my time in college, shadowing/volunteering, and the death of a family member while in college -- and how each one convinced me to go into medicine.

How hurt do you think I would be by applying this late (assuming I get my secondaries all in by ~late August)?

Even if you applied today, you would not be verified by AMCAS for a month (or more). We have aleady received and screened a couple of thousand applicants.

The one thing I expect out of a re-applicant is an early submission.

We have almost identical stats-- so yes, it was most likely your late app. I would recommend waiting a year; if you apply now, you still would most likely be considered late. I would not recommend a master's-- your stats are fine. If I were in your shoes, I would continue with the research and volunteering over the year.

OP get your stuff in ASAP. I think if you have secondaries in by mid-late August you'll still be fine as long as you apply broadly.

Any suggestions on what I should do for the coming year, and/or any other improvments for my app?

Something that gives you value added as a future physician, or puts food on the table (whichever fits your situation).

Is it a disadvantage to skip an application cycle...assuming I use the time to do something that gives me value added as a future physician?

You should have submitted the primary asap and had secondaries completed by late July to early August. Do that next year, and you will get in somewhere.

I applied late two years ago. Late interviews, a few waitlists and no acceptances. This year, I applied the day AMCAS opened, and I'm already sitting on an invite for a top 10 school. Early pays off.

Applying early cannot be overstated enough. There is no reason why you shouldn't get in. I had a mediocre GPA and MCAT (3.5 and a 28) and I was accepted at my #2 school on the first round of applicants. The same goes for residency programs and cannot be said enough - APPLY EARLY!!!! Good luck man, you'll get in.

Quit fussing and start applying now! Your numbers are fine for many medium tier schools. CA schools are pretty competitive, so try USC and maybe UCLA. Western and TUCOM-CA would take you in a heartbeat.

I'm not interested in DO schools at all at this point. If I can wait one year and get into an MD program it is worth it to me. What is your opinion just on MD schools?

I'd be very surprised if you couldn't at least swing some interviews this year at MD schools. But, as my colleague gyngyn points out, even Mid July might be too late.

You should have applied June 1st.

I can tell you with a high degree of confidence that it is now late for a re-applicant with OP's stats for either UCLA or USC. Sorry...

There's really no excuse for applying this late. Why didn't you submit on day one? You can (for a lot of it) copy/paste!

Do you mind listing the schools you applied too? I am a little worried as my stats are worse than yours. Thank you.
