Background: I earned a HP on my medicine clerkship, and I'm interested in radiology.
I was diagnosed with a pretty rare endocrine disorder after my medicine clerkship. This disorder is easily corrected with the appropriate drug, and I have found that my energy level is about 10x what it was while I was on my clerkship.
After discussing things with my dean, it became clear that this probably affected my performance on my medicine clerkship, especially on long call nights. The clerkship director has offered to allow me to repeat the entire clerkship in an effort to learn more and show a better performance.
Do you think it would be worth it to repeat the 8 week clerkship in an effort to earn an honors, given that I'm interested in radiology, a very competitive field? My dean said that we could explain the extra time by saying something like "He was allowed additional time on clerkships due to a previously undiagnosed endocrine disorder." He also said residency directors probably wouldn't be too worried about something like this.
What do you think? Would this be a red flag to residency directors, or would it be worth the risk? I have heard that getting an "H" in medicine is pretty important for radiology. Also, my other grades have been straight HP so far (peds and surgery).
