Hello all,

Non-trad with a degree in the humanities, graduated 2012. Highest level achieved in math was college algebra, which I did well in with an A. Coming back to do a DIY post bacc and am enrolled in chem I for the fall.

My questions are: what kind of math is involved in chemistry, and would it serve me well to audit the class for a refresher? Or would some self study suffice?

I don't want to show up day 1 woefully unprepared. I'm already nervous as it is, given I have almost no science background, except for low level bio and chem for liberal arts majors.

Thanks!

Gen Chem involves moving from different units and some plug and chug for equations. None of which would require anything higher than college algebra imo. Gen chem 2 is a bit more math heavy (still not bad), will work some logarithmic work when you get to pH and other calculations to solve for total change in heat. Again nothing more required than algebra. You'll be fine.

You can use Khan academy to review if you don't want to take an algebra class this summer... Also check the schools you're interested in bc they might highly recommend or require calculus (don't need it for gen chem though)

Youtube now hosts a ton of MOOCs, such as UMKC's 'College Algebra with Professor Richard Delaware' if you want a hassle free refresher. (And that was a quick search--you might find something even better)

Thanks all! I picked up an "Algebra for Dummies" book from the local book store, gonna work through some chapters in that and hope that gets the gears moving again!
