I'm having a dilemma right now. I'm an AMG, received As, Bs, and Cs in my classes and rotations, and scored a 216 on Step 1. I took Step 2 earlier in my 4th year and unfortunately I went down and scored a 210. I'm well aware that these are both below average, but I'm unsure if I should send an updated USMLE transcript before the ranking/match. Some people have told me to send one after I've already matched. However, others have told me that since I at least passed Step 2 CK I should send the transcript anyway.

Any advice?

I would send. Most programs would rather know that you passed, especially if your step 1 was below average. It will only help to confirm that you've passed... Believe me, they're not just assuming you'll get a 260 until proven otherwise.

I would send in the updated USMLE transcript. What I care most about is whether an applicant has passed the examination, not whether it is a 210 or a 230. When I see that an applicant has not released the score, then I begin to suspect that they have failed the test.

And keep in mind that some programs will not rank applicants without proof that you've passed all your Step's.

I've only had one (very odd) interview where my scores were brought up at all . . . both my step 1 and step 2 scores were below average, and although my step 2 went up numerically, in comparison to the mean and SD it was approximately the same. Even from that odd interviewer who actually brought up grades and test scores, I got the impression that she only cared I passed. So send it in.

Thanks! I took everyone's advice and sent it in 🙂
