I know this question gets asked all the time, but it's nice to get feedback specifc to my own situation. I took the April MCAT and did not so great (11V 10B 7P L). I can't retake in August for many reasons and am stuck with the decision of whether to apply this year or wait yet another year and retake in April. I am open to applying to both MD & DO schools, but am not sure if I have a chance at either. My ug GPA was 3.71, but it's been 3 years since I've taken any classes. I did do a year of Americorps and have been working in a medicine dept at a university since then that has given me exposure to lots of docs and what they do. I'm about to begin as a coodinator for a couple of clinical trials as well. Do I try this year or wait again? I'm already 25 and don't want to wait much longer. Help!?

Physical Sciences is, if you are willing to put in the effort, one of the most improveable (I think I made that word up, lets just say malleable) of your scores. If you felt your score was due to a lack of preparation as opposed to not having used physical sciences in a while, then you might want to retake it. Otherwise, I think your plan to apply to both MD and DO schools is a good one. Sorry i cant help you with any more information.

I think you have a great shot at getting accepted this year. Sure the 7 hurts, but lots of people get worked over by a section on the MCAT (myself included). I had a friend last year with a very good GPA, good EC's, and a 25 on the MCAT and that was with a 12 in verbal. He was accepted at 3 schools including one top ten. Also, as I understand it, most school rank MCAT scores as follows: Bio>Verbal>Phy. I don't think you would have a problem getting into any DO school, but I also think you have a real shot at an MD school.

Good luck

Go for it. You have a lot of great things going on for you. I don't see why not. 🙂

Where do you think I may have a shot? I'd definitely apply to my state schools, but what others? I'd prefer to stay in the Midwest if possible, but am open to elsewhere too.

Read over the schools you like and apply, realize you will have to apply to a large # of schools, say 20-30. Then realize you will be filling out a lot of secondaries, but you can recycle some essays so it's OK.

Now do NOT avoid applying to ANY school you really want to go to, you can be surprised by who eventually admists you and how easily the schools lower down can reject you...you can get into a good school if you have a great interview and secondary, good luck.😀
