Well, it's nearing the end of the application process, and things aren't looking too hot for me. I'm still waiting to hear back from Drexel and NYMC. If I get into Drexel, I'll definitely go, but if I get into NYMC only, I'm ambivalent.

I'm currently working on the major weakness I had for the 2005 application (only 2 quarters of clinical), so that I might be ready for the 2006 application if necessary, and I feel confident that I can get in somewhere "better" that NYMC if I apply again, but not sure if that's worth the hassle/time.

I'd like to hear your guys' (and gals') opinions on what I should do if I only get into NYMC.

(BTW - Reasons I didn't like NYMC: seemed like poor teaching, studnets didn't seem to like being there, too much focus on usmle's and not on clinical, bad environment (next to jail, far away from home), just generally depressing.)

If you get into NYMC, I suggest you go. There are no guarantees in this process so go with what is definite. I didn't think NYMC was that bad. They had a nice campus, and they supposedly do well in their matches, etc.

unless you have something you really want to do with the year off, i would urge you to go...

May I kindly refer you to the giant flame-o-rama thread at:

I'm in the same boat. I'm waiting to hear from a pricey school in a freezing cold city across the country from my partner and my family. Reapplying almost looks better than dirty snow in March. Well ... almost.

Unless you have the means or TREMENDOUSLY enhancing your application over the course of the next two years and are willing to shoulder both the financial burden of additional coursework and foregone earnings along with the risk of not attending med school ever, then GO ANYWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES THAT ACCEPTS YOU. Even if you do not like the environment, the people, the place, the professors, the labs, etc., etc....................................

Unfortunately the application process has random elements that are out of our control. If we are offered a chance to get into the medical profession, then seize it and do not let go. There is no guarantee that you will be offered another opportunity. If that happens then your choices slim down to applying to the osteopathic schools or the Carribean. While there is much to recommend the osteopathic schools, the Carribean is a tough road to travel. Spend your four years studying nonstop to land that posh residency.
