Should I take M1 summer off or do research?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Then don't do it. I certainly wouldn't want you moping around my lab thinking that it wasn't worth your time.

But you can't ask people to help you make a decision without an alternative. If your Plan B is to spend your summer making small children cry by stepping on their toys, then I would tell you to go do research, you know, for the kids' sake.

Research vs. Hardee's drive thru cashier?
Research vs. Netflix at parents' house?
Research vs. saving the African White Rhino?
Research vs. longboarding with your bruhs?

Context is everything. And do you want to go to Columbia for residency? As a DO applying to a top 5 program, your publications from prior to medical school might not carry much weight, especially when they find out that you spent your only potentially productive summer working as a mime. I can't tell you that you won't get into an ACGME residency if you don't do research after M1 year, but I can tell you that it could only make your application better. Better than what? Better than doing nothing. You might not get a publication, but if you can check the air of superiority, you could get a nice letter from someone with long term experience mentoring you. Not everyone has those, and they carry weight.
