I graduated with only two upper science classes because I was not a science major and I did not do too well on them...Biochem "C" and Genetics B-...Should I take more upper level science classes since my sGPA is below average--3.28? I am studying for the mcat now and i dont wanna take any classes that would interfere with my study time (working full time as well). If I sign up to take 2 more upper level science classes in Fall 2012 (August 2012), can I say that in my application so the schools I apply to are aware that I am taking more upper science classes?

Did you take all the basic pre-reqs? Physics, bio, A&P, gen chem, O-chem, etc?? If not, umm yeah, you need to take more science classes... if you have taken all of those and your GPA is 3.28, then yes, take things that interest you and are UL...

I already took all the prereqs and I got some As and more Bs on them. I will sign up for two more for fall 2012 and see if I can ace them.

Performing well in upper division courses will help you make up for lower grades in lower-level courses and are advisable. Phys is essential for the MCAT. Cell Bio and Anat can help, depending on the test though Anat is not tested directly.

I think you are about average, maybe a point average at most for the science GPA. I would also recommend taking one or two more upper level sciences but make sure you do NOT overload yourself. Don't to anything to risk getting another B. Math counts toward science so if your good at math, take another math class or statistics. Take something your good at. It does help to take some more upper levels because it will make medical school a little easier, not much but a little enough to notice. So keep that in mind. But don't do anything to risk getting anything lower than an A. Take a class in the science subject that you do the best on.

AACOMAS and DO schools DO NOT consider Math as Science. OP the following courses are crucial Genetics, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. The courses are tough but if you do well they will build your case when comes time to apply and help you a lot on the MCAT if not taken yet. However, it seems you did not do too well in some of them so I would suggest retaking the C since retakes can significantly increase your AACOMAS GPA.

Other classes that are decent are Physiology & Anatomy, infectious diseases, Histology, Microbiology

Correct. Math is not considered science. Retake the C in Biochem if possible and yes do take some more upper level science classes to show adcoms that you can handle more intense class loads.

Yea, I believe a retake of Biochem would be more beneficial than taking other courses to "boost" your gpa. The replacement of the C would help you out more by far.... Also I don't ever remember A/P being a required course. Unless the poster meant that it is something that most students take....

So I have no chance at any DO school even if I score 28+ mcat...

Hi I would retake upper levels and take more upper levels.. I agree with the other folks on this thread!!!

Nah, no one said that. But you are an underdog without a great MCAT to compensate.

Finish strong with ALL A's from here on out to make a strong case for yourself.
