Right now I go to a top 40 school but I'm debating if I should transfer or not to Northwestern for the sake of getting into NU/better med school. Should I? There is nothing I particularly dislike about my current school but Northwestern is so close to my home and might save me money in the long run

I think if it's closer to home/will save you money, that's a great reason to transfer.

I wouldn't use it as the sole reason, the college experience at the other place/friends may outweigh money/location. But if you're already considering it, do it.

I don't know how much the undergrad institution weighs in getting into higher end med schools. 4.0 and great MCAT will overcome alot. Unless you're school is notorious for grade inflation, shouldn't be much of an issue.

I don't think going to a med school's affiliated undergrad improves your chances there, but I don't know much about NU SOM. I would transfer only if it saves you money, you'll be happier, and you can still maintain good grades.

Thanks for the replies. Even if it doesn't change my chances too drastically I would still love to go to undergrad at NU and by that time I will be finished w/ all premed classes so I don't think it will be too hard. Plus if I do good at NU also wouldn't it show med schools that I can handle the work?

probably not much moreso than excelling at another undergrad institute.
