My friend asks me to join the wood carving club with him. I am not sure if I will like it or not, I have never tried it before. But I am just wondering will wood carving be a good activity to do for pre-dental students?

Go ahead, join! If you enjoy wood carving it might make for a great hobby or past time, plus, that is something you can put down on your application for manual dexterity. Plus, stating that you are a member of a wood carving club might just might be the thing (amongst others) that will help you stand out in the minds of adcoms.

definitely do it. for one, you'll find out you like working with your hands or not, and hence if dentistry is the thing for you at all.

i just tried cleaning with a cavitron on a patient yesterday, my first time ever touching a handpiece. I do a lot of scale modeling so I thought i'm used to working with small things, but working in the mouth is really no piece of cake, especially with something sharp and spraying water all over at the same time 😀

I say go for it, it couldn’t hurt your manual dexterity. But, I wouldn’t tell anyone about it when you get to dental school, you might get a wedgee and/or a swirly 😉

I guess my opinion differs a bit from everybody elses. I'd say do it if it interests you, but don't do it to get into dental school. No adcom is going to care about it (seriously) and I honestly doubt it would help that much as far as using a handpiece.

Wood carving is nothing like using a handpiece. There are some similarities, but nothing miraculous.

It does sound like fun (to me anyway!) so do it if you have time. It certainly wouldn't hurt your dexterity, but don't expect to be a whiz in the simlab after carving wood.
