Hi all. Im new here but any advice would be appreciated as I am kinda lost for a decision.

I graduated college June 2011 and applied to the 2012 amcas cycle with no interviews (I applied broadly to all kinds of MD schools). My PS was written well but now that I think about it was more about research than medicine. I hardly emphasized the human qualities at all. Also since I applied to about 40 schools my secondaries weren't the best.

my stats were:
Top 20 university
cGPA: 3.40
sGPA: 3.37
MCAT: 30S (10PS/9VR/11BS)

4 yrs research experience (1 publication as 5th author with another supposedly coming)
4 yrs teaching underprivileged kids
1 summer surgical internship and research (35/hrs per week from June-Sept) - gave a presentation as 1st author at a major medical conference
Some other undergraduate level presentations and stuff

SINCE THEN

-Did another year of paid research with another lab in a related field (paper coming whenever my PI feels like it)
-Retook MCAT and got 33Q (12PS/9VR/12BS)- was hoping for higher given my AAMC PT average of 37 but hey what can you do?
-Accepted to Tufts MBS and will be attending in August this year 2012. I plan to work my butt off. Also the MBS closely mirrors the 1st year of med school at Tufts SOM, so thats a plus.

So now the question is, should I apply to some schools right now and send them updates about my grades at Tufts MBS or should I just wait till the summer of 2013 to apply? The reason I want to apply now is to avoid having another gap year to fill, but I think my app could be stronger if I wait given that the MBS will provide me more clinical opportunities. I really want to avoid another gap year if possible.

Sorry for his long post! I wanted to be thorough though. I hope to hear from any one of you guys soon.

Thanks!

When did you apply last year? Your stats are pretty low for a late MD application this year. Will you be done with your MS by next summer?

So you have no shadowing and you didn't add any volunteering or anything that shows you actually care about people and not just research. Your GPA is pretty low especially if you're going to be applying late july/early august. Just do the Tufts thing.

Thanks for the input. The surgical internship was almost all shadowing so I would use that in my PS, but yea my GPA is low. I think applying after the SMP is a good idea. its only year i guess. It just sucks to find a job and stuff while doing apps.

Put the shadowing on your AMCAS too. Just in case.
