I wanted to get some current student's opinions on whether or not I should keep working at a pharmacy during pharmacy school. My husband makes enough for us on which to live. But, do you think that I'd increase my learning and/or chances for a job after I finish with pharmacy school?

if you have to work, make it minimal. i work every other weekend at a poison control center and that is plenty for me. i really need weekends to catch up and/or relax. i'm so glad i don't work during the week; that's devoted to schoolwork. as for increased learning, i'm sure you would learn more, but you should be able to keep up w/classes without working. it may help you find a job in the long run, but that's probably only in specialized cases.

I would try to work at least one day a week, especially if you plan to continue with the same employer after graduation. Aside from the practical experience you'll get counseling patients (assuming you work retail), you'll also be accruing time-in-service with the company, which can equal more vacation time and better work location once you're an RPh, as well as knocking several years off the 401k vesting schedule!

Thanks for your opinions!

Yes, it is retail. Even if you only work one day per week, does that still count towards the 401k?

That all depends on how the employer set up their plan. Some require 1,000 hrs in any year that is to count toward vesting, where other plans don't have that stipulation. You can find out by calling HR and requesting a copy of their Summary Plan Document.
