should neurosurgery students do research and publish articles?

This is a weird post as I’m pretty sure most residency programs require some sort of research to be done and it’s one of the things that gets looked at for fellowships.
I don't really know the answer but am I the only one who doesn't think it's a weird question? OP's question isn't "do they," it's "should they." Just because most programs require it doesn't mean it's right. I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason they require it is because it increases the number of people working on research at the institution without having to hire people on top of what they hire to run the service.
