should you be abbreviating in your essays?

I am writing a lot of secondary essays and was curious how many of you are abreviating common things or if you are spelling them out.

Things such as:
PCP
OMM
D.O.
school names e.g. KCOM vs. Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicince.

You'd better get used to acronyms and abbreviations because you'll be using them the rest of your life. You may hear anterior superior iliac spine one time. For the rest of your life it'll be the ASIS. They know what it means, so use it. It's really a non-issue.
