Hello, I have been accepted to both medical schools and I could really use the help in deciding which one to attend.
New York Institute of Technology (NYITCOM-AR)
* Pass/Fail
* Relationship with ASU Jonesboro campus and their facilities (nice gym, library etc.)
* Connection to the well-established NYITCOM (NY) program. Supposedly one school, two campuses.
* non-mandatory attendance
* Lectures are prerecorded
* Has been around for four years longer
Cons:
* 64,000$ tuition and fees
* 7.5 hours from home (only method of transportation is via an automobile)
* High remediation rate (19% remediation rate for Foundations of medicine class???)
* Rotations are in mostly rural areas, except for Shreveport and Little Rock.
* School admin doesn’t seem to care about students’ feedback???
* Old, less equipped building
Sam Houston State University (SHSU-COM)
Pros:
- P/F
- 3 hour drive from home
- can keep friendships/relationships
- Potential reduction in tuition. They are a public school in Texas but right now they are not subsidized by the state. There is a bill in the senate right now that may change this. This means 60k ---> 20k
- Will probably have more in common with classmates as 90% of them have to be TX residents.
- Great Board passing rates for a brand-new school
-very nice and new building with a student socialization/rest area and cool technology
-really liked my interview day and it seemed like the student ambassadors enjoyed the school.
Cons:
- No match results/rates to go off of.
- Less research opportunities
- Doesn't have the somewhat reputation that NYITCOM-AR has.
-a few SHSU students I talked to have told me to avoid it because it is a newer school that has yet to sort out it’s kinks like a finalized curriculum etc.
-rotations mostly in rural areas but many more are being added over time.
My mind is with NYITCOM-AR but my heart is with SHSU.
