I'll be a M1 in August, and I'm wondering how you all keep from getting sick when you're working really long hours and not getting enough sleep. I've been working a mixture of 8p-6a and 4a-12p shifts and overtime at the hosptial, and the next thing I know, I'm sick with all sorts of stuff eg. uti, earache, throat, congestion, low grade fever...I'm just wondering how to avoid this because work is miserable when you feel like crap... Any advice from people who work a lot, skimp on sleep, and DO manage to stay healthy and not get sick?

This is NOT normal. Those hours aren't even that bad. What are you doing in the hospital? I've never heard of hospital workers getting UTI's from the job. Are you washing your hands before you...eh... do your business? Really, this is odd. You might want to see a doc, get an HIV test etc.

i'm assuming you are female (frequent uti's). if you're a guy, you need to get checked out by a urologist.

gotta agree with LADoc00 100%. i'd go running after every overnight call (no matter how tired i feel), and i'd feel great compared to my rundown colleagues. only times i get sick is when i stop exercising.
