I am officially replacing that ridiculous mnemonic with my own re-invention: PISS CAGE.

Tell all your friends. Spread the word. I want SIG E CAPS eliminated from medical education in ten years.

I'm with you on that. It's a dumb mnemonic. I can tell you the DSM-IV criteria for depression, but please don't ask me what SIGECAPS stands for.

my preceptor taught me the reason for the acronym being the way it is.

it represents a prescription for e(nergy) capsules to cure depression:

"sig: e caps"

each letter stands for what it stands for, and then you have the colon which signifies the constipation that frequently accompanies depression. discuss.
