I've heard that you should always apply early, and it seems that people that do so do better in the application cycle. With that said, does the same apply for interviews? I've been offered 4 or so out of 20 schools I applied to, but I have a bad schedule due to a mandatory lab class this semester. Would it be a bad idea to schedule a bunch in January, when I'll be off the whole month?

What schools?

I so far only have UPitt, UMich, and my state schools...but I am asking in general...I applied to a lot of the top 20 and a few lower-ranked schools.

Yes, that would be a very bad idea at all of the rolling admissions schools; if you take the January interviews, you're going to have many fewer seats open to be won because they'll have been accepting for a full 3 months at that point.

Unfortunately, your application fall semester is hell. Just be as efficient as you can with your time, try to schedule your interviews around your exams, and write as many lab reports on the airplane as possible.

Does your lab professor seem flexible? I've known a couple who let students come in on a different day of the week to do the lab. They are aware of pre-med students interviewing at med schools...so a lot of times it just takes asking the question.

NO...Pitt finishes interviewing at the end of Jan! I made the mistake of postponing my Pitt interview until Jan (actually the last week of interviews...b/c that was all that was left)...and ended up being waitlisted.

Don't do it. Michigan and Pittsburgh are rolling admissions, and your state schools probably are too.

Ask the prof for any and all options for missing a required class. If he/she is no help, go to the department head. Your department WANTS to be known for getting kids into top tier medschools, so it is not in their best interest to hinder your application process.
