One of my secondaries is asking this question:

Please describe a personal situation of failure, significant challenge or a major obstacle that you have overcome. Include a description of your coping skills and lessons you learned about yourself from that situation.

Is coping with the death of a patient by diving deeper into work responsibilities and working harder to give other patients my best, an appropriate way to cope with such a situation? Or will that look bad?

I just wanted to clarify with a few other people.

Thank you for any help in advance.

Was the death of the patient due to a failure on your part?

As other patients die, will your response be to double down each time and work harder as your failure to give patients your best is the reason people die? How is this going to work in the long term?

No, the patients death was not on me, I was a volunteer, but it affected me because I never experienced death in that setting and I knew the patient.
And the idea of working harder dealt with that specific instance, and due that instance I always give put my best effort. So long term the idea is just to always give it my all from the beginning, while understanding not everyone can be saved... That is basically what I wrote about

If this wasn't a personal situation of failure or a significant challenge or a major obstacle, how does it fit the prompt?

The thing you write about does not have to be about medicine or patients.

How do you deal with adversity, with situations where things don't go your way? How are you going to deal with flunking a medical school exam or being burglarized or some other horrible event when you are a medical student. What coping skills and self-knowledge do you have due to previous experiences with failure, challenge or obstacle?

I felt like it was personal, because I was assigned to take care of that patient and though I was not the cause he passed while he was my responsibility. I didn't indicate that in the essay but maybe I should.

But my essay may not be able to address handling a bad exam or being burglarized, so Ill take what you said into consideration.

Another way of stating what my wise colleague is getting at is "give evidence of your coping skills and/or resilience"

And nobody leads a charmed life, either. Do some introspection.

I think they want something more personal. As in some type of mistake or a problem with someone close to you that you faced.
