I heard of some residency programs giving $1000-$5000 signing bonuses to their new residents! Don't think this is very common but anyone been so lucky??

You should hold out like Terrell Owens until the hospital is willing to fork over a 7 digit signing bonus!

I think this kinda thing usually happens to FPs and community level facilities. Ive never heard of a university program doing that. Although we are getting a relocation bonus.

There are quite a few Family Medicine programs that give a signing bonus. Most are between $5K-$10K.

I saw a few IM programs that gave bonuses, but these were in the midwestern states, Ball State, some Illinois programs etc..UIC-peoria $10,000!!!!

The psych residency at my school offers a 10K signing bonus!!!!!!!! Almost made me wanna do psych....almost.

I have heard of one in IM from a course director. It essentially boiled down to the hospital rendering to a U.S. student's loans the amount they would have saved by not hiring an FMG. I don't know if it is all worked out yet.

I remember getting several info pamphlets from the Peoria program. Not only a $10K signing bonus, but also moving expenses up to about $1500, not to mention (at the time) $40K salary in a city like Peoria. I think this was for all of their programs: Med, Peds, Surg, FP.

They used to do this when anesthesiology bottomed out as a career choice for medical students in the late '90s. When I was interviewing this year, one program director griped to me about hearing that an Ivy League department at the time was offering $18,000 signing bonuses with a laptop thrown in. As far as I know, they don't do that anymore in anesthesia.

when i interviewed for anesthesia residencies(2002), iwas offered a couple of signing bonuses if i were to match there:

Univ of Mississippi $5000 (i think)
Baylor in Houston $5000

At that time, both of these programs were mostly FMGs and were in some sort of transition with new chairs(or no chairs - Baylor) One guys from my med school matched at one of these places simply because he was offered a sign-on bonus. He was a doosh(sp?) and i didn't surprise me that he sacrificed possibly getting an inferior residency for $5K - but he wasn't the best candidate 🙂

I don't know how these programs are now so I'm not passing any judgement

CAMC/WVU in Charleston, WV offers $4k for all residency programs and subidized housing for all residents.

Are these signing bonuses for all new residents or only for AMGs?

One of the IM programs I applied for (university program in the midwest), offered $15,000 a year in loan forgiveness (i.e. they pay off $15,000 of your student loans for each of the three years of residency). It wasn't enough to get me to go there though.

I understand. It's not like the money will make a difference for training you will only do once so you want to do it at the right place.

Yes, the money is given to IMG's and AMG's. They give the same stuff to the same year residents.

Many primary care programs, especially in the Specialty Which Dare Not Speak Its Name, offer a signing bonus. LSU Shreveport is one of these I believe.
