Hello everyone,

I have a question about personalities in medicine. I'm currently a volunteer at a hospital and am currently studying (well, restudying) for my MCAT. In my limited experiences in the hospital, the Anesthesiologist doctors are BY FAR the nicest to me. Meaning, I could be pushing a kangaroo pump down the hall and if i'm walking by one they'll say hello to me first. The 3 that i'm talking about are all very nice. Now I very rarely see one and if I do it's either in the lunch room or on one of the "U" rooms (icu, cvcu, pcu, spu etc.) but they are always nice to me.

Contrast that to the general surgeons. I will walk by a surgeon and say hello....and they'll just walk right by me as if I don't even exist. Now I know that it is NOT the job of a surgeon or any physician to be nice to me, but my question is, is it really that bad? It's as if they're miserable.

I do admit that I am just a pre med and am ignorant to a lot that really goes on. I always looked at medicine as one of the few admirable fields one could take up and go into regardless of what specialty you choose.

I would ask this in the surgeon forum but needless to say i've had better experiences with Anesthesiologists in my hospital....and i'm quite intimidated by them.

Thank you for reading.

Hello everyone,

In my limited experiences in the hospital, the Anesthesiologist doctors are BY FAR the nicest to me.

Go meet some pediatricians. They are the coolest, nicest people in medicine.

Anesthesiologists are cool too, don't get me wrong.

But we certainly have plenty of a**holes around. Just spend some time with the historical posts on this board...😉

So far i've only had the opportunity to shadow an ED doctor while I was in high school a few years ago. Very nice lady. And Pediatrics is a field I will certainly consider. I'll consider all fields actually, all I care about is doing something I will enjoy for the rest of my life.

But it just seems like surgery requires a certain type of person. I think it must be fun to do procedures but is the trade off a lack of personality? I know it sounds extreme but I truly am trying to grasp why the difference in affability.

Thanks for the response.

HOLY CRAP!!!!
They never would have found the body if my daughter was one of his patients...
He's lucky to get life. I really don't understand how he could have done what he did. What were the parents doing while he took the kids out the side door? What about the office staff?

That is a great question. If you say you have to do an exam on my 2 y/o without me in the room - it's time I get a new pediatrician.

I often do think in our profession, how strange it is...and how tough it must be....for the parents to say good bye to their child as I (a complete stranger essentially) carry them away into an unknown area (the operating room). That's a lot of trust given to us. I will let them come back to the room for induction most of the time if appropriate.
