I am applying for a research position this winter and along with a cover letter and resume I need to send in references. I know this is a really stupid question, but does references mean just a list of people with contact numbers? Or does this mean letters of recommendation? Sorry for such a dumb question... thanks for everyones help.

I had this same problem at the beginning of the summer! I just gave a list of 3 people, how to contact them, and how they knew me and how long they've known me.

For example:
John Smith
[email protected], 1-234-567-8910
Supervisor at X-Job for 2 Years

And they seemed fine with that, they never commented on it except to say that they had contacted my references.

Hope this helps!

When a potential employer asks for references, that generally means a list of people (they should tell you how many, usually about 3) with contact information for each. If they want you to ask for letters from these people, they will specify "letters of recommendation" instead of "references". Hope this answers your question 🙂

thank you both of you ^^ !! Engineeringvet - if you don't mind me asking, who did you put for your references? Veterinarians, past employers, teachers?? I was thinking of putting at least 1 vet for one of the references but would a veterinarian I shadowed with really be appropriate for a reference?
