Hi,
I will be applying to the match next year and my biggest concern is my interviewing skills. For some reason I am horrible at it. Part of the reason is probably because english is not my native language and part of the reason is nerves. If I was asked the same question under no stress situtation I can answer it easily but for some reason I always mess up interviews.

What I wanted to know is are there any company or consultants I can hire that can help you with it. I am thinking interviewing is just like anything else with practice you get better..

I don't know of any company that offers such a service, but you may not need it.

You may not need an expert, just a warm body. Especially if nerves are really your biggest problem. Practice with other medical students that are relaxed in interviews (or even if they're not).

Start with questions that you have prepared yourself, so there are no surprises. Then role play. It probably sounds really silly, but it can boost your confidence. Besides, you already know some questions you will likely be asked when interviewing at residency programs and yet they probably still make you nervous. Knowing the questions beforehand may not help unless you have practiced answering them. Then have your friend ask you questions that you are not prepared for. See how that goes for you.

After a role play it is very important that you first identify things that you did that you DID WELL! Don't jump to criticism, because doing that will only make your nerves worse. Have your friend point out things that went well. You don't have to fabricate things. I'm sure you will have done something right. Small easy things are REALLY important. And I'm sure you did them: looking into the persons eyes, shaking their hand with clinical firmness, listening to the question without thinking in your mind of a response until the interviewer has finished asking the question, etc.

Make sure that practice doesn't rob sincerity. Practice should develop your ability to articulate, not fabricate (not that I'm suggesting you would).

Don't know if that helps. Just thought I'd give a crack at it. You may already know everything I just wrote and it's something else you're looking for. If so, sorry for the waste. I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Check out Toastmasters. It works.

If you do an elective rotation at a program, they'll be able to look past your poor interview skills if they see you work and feel like you would be a good fit.

BTW, how did med school interviews go. You obviously got past them

Med school interview did not go so well. I ended up going to a carribean school despite a 3.7 science GPA and a 94 percentile MCAT from a well recognized university. PArt of it also might be the fact that I was only 19 when I graduate with my bachelors and well the nerves, along with my accent, and poor interview skills probably just made me look STUPID.

However, Just wanted to say that going to the carribean school was one of my biggest blessing in disguise and I have never been proud of belonging to an institution as much as I am proud of belonging to This particular one.

I have actually heard of toastmasters and went to their website.. To the posted that suggested it. Have u tried it?
thanks.
