*sigh* this whole applying to medical school process is really starting to get me. I thought at least one chicago school would at least interview me, but thus far, i've been rejected pre-interview at NW (understandable), UIC, and most recently Finch. I'm still waiting for Rush and Loyola, but it seems my chances are getting slimmer and slimmer by the day. Anyone know any ways to boost up my chances there?

Anyways, i've been accepted to University of Louisville (as an out of state), wait listed at Saint Louis Univ, and accepted at SIU. SIU seems to be very intrigueing since their tuition is soooo low. Does anyone know how my possibilities of residencies will be if I attend SIU? Since they seem to focus more on rural medicine, would that affect my chances of applying and getting accepted to any urban (note: Chicago) residencies?😕

Ask SIU for a match list. From that you may be able to see where students are ending up for residencies.

As you know, SIU is a much cheaper school than most--even for out-of-staters. It has a good reputation in all primary care fields and is constantly ranked well in any list you can find (US News, etc.). Most people who are accepted come from rural areas, want to serve in rural areas, or have strong ties to the southern Illinois area. Anyway, no matter where you go your chances for residencies depend on your performance in clinicals your 3rd & 4th years, how you do on the steps, and how well you interview at the residency site. If you liked everything about SIU, I think you should not be hesitant if it turns out to be the only place you're accepted. Stay focused on your goal--to become an excellent physician!

I have a 2002 match list from SIU and they placed quite a few people in central/southern IL but there are also many who went to the Chicago area and other places around the midwest. Some also went to FL and one to CA....so it seems like they place all over IL and the area and remember the central/southern #'s are so high b/c that is their goal when selecting students. Anyway I agree with the previous poster about residency...a lot of it depends on what you make of your time in med school and how well you do on Step I. Good luck!
