Congrats! I got accepted too. Has anyone received the acceptance package in the mail yet? I am wondering when it will get here.

I've been looking for a fb group too, would love to have one!

Hey guys I want to apply to SIU for next fall.. I Have my application filled out and ready to turn in .. and i am taking the DAT soon.. My grades are solid (3.8). I know this is late, i just decided that i wanted to apply to dental school. Do you think i would still stand a chance if i got my application turned in now and took the DAT in a few weeks? or is it too late?

Thanks!

Hey guys, how easy is it for D1 to get into research program? I read on their website that you need to have an abstract and materials and procedures completed to apply. And there is only 5 positions.

Well as a current D1 student that is going through the process of getting a research position I would tell you that it is competitive, but that there a whole lot of opportunities to do research. Yes there are 5 positions, but consider that most D2-D3 students have to be 100% focused on their clinic work, it leaves almost exclusively D1 students applying for the grants. When you get on campus, I would tell you to become part of the research group on campus, and then decide which instructor you want to work with and go from there.

Hope this helps!

Can multiple people do research (>5), but only 5 are awarded Fellowships?

I am not totally sure what decision the research committee made on that. They were talking about having a "second tier" in research, in where if a student did not get the $3000 grant, then they would still be able to do research that was somehow supported by the university. What it breaks down to is that the research has to be official so that D1 students during the summer have key card access to the campus and for liability reasons. This is because D1 students are not enrolled during the summer break (have it off to study for boards).

Honestly, if you really want to do research and find a good mentor, you should not have too much of a fight to get a position or some type of grant funding.

So this is after you start school right? UIC offered some kind of stipend where you do research for 10wks during the summer before school but the price is way higher than SIU. I am going down there today for the interview.

Thank you for your response.

So just an update on the research. I will tell you that if you want to do research in anyway that you will have almost no problem getting a position. As of Monday I am a Dean's Summer Student Research Fellow! Which is pretty awesome, as well I believe that everyone applied got into a position. Also there is plenty of research that is not as full time with other faculty that research opportunities are overflowing. NO they are not the semester before the D1 year, but during the summer between D1 and D2 years.

Hope this helps!

Thank you very much. I was unfortunately given a "no decision and wait for final update". I was told that only several people from Chicago get accepted and that you have to be Caucasian.

What upsets me most is that during the interview, the teachers were very nice but the students were not at all. They wouldn't even look me in the eyes during the tour because I was Asian. I felt very discriminated.

My also Asian dentist who graduated from SIU almost got kicked out of the school during his 4th year because he was the only Asian there. He told me that the teacher caught him cheating. It is just sad.

Are you trolling?

No, This is what I experienced when I was interviewing down there. None of the students even said hi.

Why even troll? I wanted to go down there because of the better education as compared to UIC, I turned down UPenn as well just for SIU but reality is reality.

LoL 🙄 👎

Who told you the bolded? They sound bitter. If you look at the current facebook group you'll see that isn't true in the slightest.

In regards to the students, are you serious? 😛 You are reading way too much into it. The last sentence is brilliant - yup, the school would dedicate all this time, energy, and resources to train a dentist for 4 years - but hey, he's Asian. Let's see if we can get him out. Notsureifsrs. It is sad? The misinformation/perception is sad.

I'm white, none of the students said hi to me either. They must be self-hating racists. I felt very discriminated against.

See what I did there?

The students are busy as hell in the clinic, you cannot expect them to come running with open arms.

Well. that was what he told me. There was just one specific professor who has rumors about kicking out minority. Hey, I am not speculating anything. He told me this.

SIU is a great school but the atmosphere might be not the best for me. Good luck to you all.

Professors don't have the power to kick people out of school. I think you're reading into it a little too much.

So I just received an offer. Don't know what I should do.
