I am starting PT school this June and have been considering buying a full size skeleton model and was wondering if anyone currently in PT school had suggestions on what type might be most useful. I know that all programs will have models to use, but I thought it would be nice to have one to use outside of class/lab as well for studying anatomy and other subjects. Would a skeleton with the origins/insertions painted on be helpful, or would a simple plain-Jane skeleton be best? Would it be helpful to have a skeleton that is able to better replicate true human movement for other classes as I advance through the program?

I know a decent model is spendy but I am very fortunate to be attending one of the lower-cost programs and as I am entering after a few years out of undergrad, my current financial situation is likely a little different than most students who enter PT school straight out of undergrad, so I am not as concerned with the expense. Plus the price of the skeleton in comparison my DPT education and the potential pay-off in better grades and such is worth it in my opinion.

Thank you in advance for your help!

I was considering this as well. Although I wont be able to afford one here were my thoughts. Having the origins and insertions would be helpful as it will help visualize muscle movement and reinforce anatomy material. A skeleton that replicates true human movement would be better because you can visualize different case studies.

I had an idea to look for a skeleton that even had muscle (that were flexible) to be able to position the skeleton in any way to help with case studies. I dont one exists like this but even considered using stretchy fabric. But then Id be spending all my time doing arts and crafts and not studying.

I can't speak for other programs, but we rec'd a "bone box" at the start of the start of school for Anatomy, and returned them after the course was over. Maybe your program does something similar. If they don't, I would still hold off on buying anything now. Wait until you at least start the program to determine if you really would benefit from one. If you do get one, I wouldn't get anything too fancy.

They should have one at your program, don't waste your money. Everything available online. Plenty of great apps out there too!
