Love it - Although it does take a bit of computer literacy to really get it up and running.

I've got it running (with another app) on my I-Pod Touch... can make phone calls for free anywhere I have free WiFi (and since I am only at home or at school, I can pretty much leave my cell at home)

What hardware, software do you recommend in order to get the best use out of it? Do both parties have to have a camera, or can you just use the voice capabilities if one party does not?

ahh I LOOOVEEE Skype.

Pretty much anyone can use it, and both parties do not need a camera, but it is nice to be able to see the other person. I have it on my mac (which is also 2 years old now), but most of my friends have PCs and it works just fine for them too! My dad's computer was a desktop and didn't have a camera, and I believe was over 5 years old when he used it, and even just the voice features worked when we did it...so he could see me and I could hear him...but then I just bought him a cheap camera with a built in microphone for his B-day and that worked great too!!!

I haven't heard of anyone getting viruses from it, and I have been using it for over 2 years now...it was a lifesaver when I went abroad to Australia because all the calls are FREE!!!

Go Skype!!!😀

It has saved my life the past few months while i've been studying abroad. I have it set up so that I can call any mobile phone in the States, and I only pay $2.95/month! Of course, you can always just do it for free if you want to call others while they're at their computer. However, my family isn't around a computer often enough, so i figured it would just be easiest to pay the measly fee.

Thanks so much! I think I'll try it out... now it's just convincing all my friends to get it too lol... A lot of them are around their computers a lot studying and such, and i'll still have my mobile to keep in contact with those that hide away from their comps.

I have it- both skype in and skype out. I don't make enough calls for the unlimited US outgoing, so I just buy airtime $10 at a time. I like the skype in because it made it easier on my mother- who doesn't like dealing with weird stuff (other than me) to call while I was in NZ, and gave me a stable phone number, no matter where I might happen to be. My father now uses it also.

Oh, and it runs well- depending on what else I have going in the background- on my little fujitsu (build for battery and portability, not power) which has been known to grind to a halt with Diablo2.

wait... what's the difference between skype in and skype out...

Hmm, i thought it was just simple skype lol. What do you get with the free one? It seems a couple of you spend a little money for certain things.

curious also about the difference between skype in and out. Which one would you use if you are in another country wanting to call back to the US? Can you get a plan to call cell phones and land lines?

I believe "Skype in" is calling comp to comp...which is free ...and "Skype out" is comp to phone? I only use the comp to comp function...and that works perfectly for me and my friends/parents/bf etc. no matter where I am in the world...

Hm, I never knew there were separate terms for it either. Anyways, you can get a monthly plan with unlimited calls to cell phones (I think landlines as well, but not positive). As I said, i pay $2.95 for unlimited calling to cell phones from out of the country. I'm not positive whether its different for calls made from within the states. skype's website should have all the info. about different plans you can get.

ya i have barely explored their website but will probably check it out before i download anything... I need to work on getting friends to use it too, because i don't think it is very useful if your freinds don't use the comp to comp function... i'll keep my mobile for other phone calls, rather than paying extra (even if it is only 3 dollars)...

now, to convincing friends to download it lol... 😀

They may have changed the name since I signed up- I only renew once a year. Normal skype is free- just a name, and you can voice and video chat comp to comp.

Skype in is.. like 60 bucks a year, and gives you unlimited incoming calls, voicemail, and a real live, can dial it from a telephone number. Mainly tho it's a normal phone number- just like any other VoIP dealy.

Skype out is just credit to spend calling telephones- landlines and cells. Like prepaid cell phone credits, only on the computer.

If you have unlimited cell and are staying in the US, then the phone number is probably not needed. I have it because I use it for my permanent phone number, and because I have a pre-paid, cheap cell. It's the whole budget thing- my whole "phone" bill averages about $22 a month, and my mother knows how to call me no matter where I am- a def. plus, since she's a near total technophobe.

Clear as mud?

I don't use Skype (hubby's work pays our cell phones) but I have friends that do. They call to my cell. It seems to work ok, other than a bit of sound delay (though I occasionally get that on cell to cell calls as well.)

If I knew more pepole who used it on the computer, I probably would. It wasn't really around when I was overseas.

wow, so you can pretty much use it as your phone service.. hmm, nice. I rely on my mobile to much though, and i don't think i would trust my car to get me from point A to point B without breaking down and me not have the ability to call AAA or something...

Skype is awesome! It's my main messenger and it has great features. Even though, it has NO viruses!
