I beta tested Star Wars Galaxies. It was a great game at first but they really dropped the ball with the changes they made after release IMO. I had a top level Beast Master soon after release and loved it until they nerfed everything. Running around with three Rancors was fun as hell... 😀

I will never forget, as long as I live, my first time playing color games on an Apple IIe and the many games I played on my Apple IIc. Well, unless I get any of a number of forms of dementia I guess...

In any case, RIP Steve Jobs; you have left an indelible impression in my life and the lives of many others.

Star Wars Galaxies sucked, badly.

I really want this new KOTOR to be good, but, chances are, it will disappoint hardcore gamers. When I looked at the class overview, it looked VERY tracked.

However, I do think the pvp will be fun in that it does not look like it will be a rock-paper-scissors situation.

Should I assume the reason this thread hasn't been updated is that everyone has been playing Skyrim non-stop since Friday?

I may buy it eventually, but I have a lot of games to work through first. Right now I'm playing Mass Effect 2.

I've been enjoying this thread 🙂

I've got end-of-year exams so much game playing happening right now (or for a while), but as soon as I finish I'll be giving LA Noir a spin, Arkham, as well as finally finishing Portal 2 and attempting to get through the remaining chamber challenges in Portal 1. Skyrim looks good too.

I've been playing fantasy RPGs for a while now - started with really old-school games like Golden Axe, and have played tabletop games too. Actually, I think this style of gaming has helped me in my studies by teaching me to categorise things, remember rules, but to think flexibly as well.

I also play WoW (*waits to get panned for this*) but I'm not sure this really helps with psychology at all...except maybe with observing crowd/group psychology, and behaviours in an anonymous but structured environment at work 😀.

I called my son yesterday and he informed me that he needed to cut the call short if it was okay. Why? Because he had been playing "the most awesome game ever" and desperately needed a nap. My son never naps.

My husband just started playing LA Noir and really enjoys it. Sounds like it's definitely the type of game that would appeal to me for the future. .... I'm sure it's evident that I'm a big fan of Portal 2 🙂

WoW could totally help with psychology. I'm actually planning to delve into "Video Game Addiction" as a side interest once I graduate (partially because its interesting on its own, partially because I like contrasting drugs and "behavioral addictions" given the literature differentiating them is weak). I'm not sure playing WoW exactly helps achieve that on its own...but familiarity with it could certainly help!

Oh my God! This game has taken over my existence. Dissertation proposal?? What dissertation proposal??!!

I've been enjoying the game as well. I work with high functioning adolescents on the autistic spectrum so I can reasonably consider playing Skyrim to be "research" 🙂.

That's code for, "I spent all night up playing this new game and I'm about to pass out from exhaustion..."

Well I'm on the beta list (already have the Beta key via IGN) for KOTOR MMORPG, just waiting for it to start letting people play...

Yeah, fun game. I just wish Destruction magic weren't so darn weak. I ended up switching to a thief, which I'm finding a lot more enjoyable.

you think its weak? I play on expert and my high elf mage destroys everything. You have to get impact (combined magic attacks stagger opponents) and the mage armor (wear all cloth and armor boosting spells do 2x, 3x, 4x protection). I have a mage companion now and it's just ridiculous.

Thief looks fun though. I am holding off on thieves guild quests so the game will have replay value.

I didn't get that far with it. I stopped at level seven. Well, actually, I switched from the PS3 to the PC and decided to try something different after switching. Otherwise I would have stuck with the destruction mage longer.

BTW, if anyone is on the fence, the PC version looks MUCH better than the PS3 version. If you have a decent rig that is....

Definitely. I have the PS3 version and it has texture loading issues.

Of course, it's got to be better than the Xbox version.

I have a Skyrim hangover...

Wow... SWTOR is impossible to log into. I received my beta acceptance and a link to the page where I can download the game, but it is impossible to access. It is freezing from all of the player traffic...

I just bought this for PS3 and I am pretty happy with it so far. It looks a lot like oblivion (which is cool with me). I just tried to attack my first giant today and got taken out in one hit (I am a lvl 5).

At level 19 they take me out in two hits, and I put 95% in health so far! This is on a thief with light armor and daggers though. If I sneak up and dual dagger hit them from behind with a power move for 15x damage I kill them easily though...

I almost caved and picked up this game Saturday.

Almost.

Then I caught myself looking for it another store yesterday. Thankfully, they did not carry it (WTF?!).

This was probably a good thing. 😳

The combination of an X-Box and a wide screen TV and Skyrim means that my dissertation proposal just won't get done!

I seem to recall not fully attending to candidacy exams thanks in part to the Xbox (after not having played in many, many, many moons because I know how I get with games). :meanie:

Since then, I returned to being a good li'l student and placed all gaming on hold. 🙁 I've been reconsidering as of late, buuut as I have this pesky dissertation to work upon, I suspect it's probably not a good idea. 🙄

It's nice to hear that other grad students suffer from gaming addictions ; )
I had to sell my very nice, very expensive gaming PC and switch to Mac because too much time was being wasted on video games instead of grad work. Macs, as any PC gamer knows, is an arctic tundra when it comes to worthwhile games. Unfortunately, all I've done is discovered console gaming on the XBOX, and Skyrim is coming for christmas. 2012 will be another unproductive year... oh well, its worth it ; )

What?! You don't use bootcamp to run a Windows 7 partition on your Mac???

Oops. I probably shouldn't have told you that... 😀

I had the urge to revive this older thread since I'm finally getting around to playing Skyrim. I wonder when the novelty of being on post-doc and finally having time to do things I want will wear off. On the other hand, I have an article I'm supposed to submit at the end of this month that I haven't been working on very much. I guess some things never change.

Like war. War never changes. http://www.howlongtobeat.com/gameimages/Fallout_3_cover_art.PNG

Fallout 3 delayed a few of my manuscripts.

I'm tempted to pick up the newest Kingdom Hearts (because growing up is for suckers), but then nothing will get done....

I just finished Fallout 3 about 3 weeks ago. "Finished" being a really loose term here, since I know I could always load it up again, wander around, and find even more things to do.

The expansions are fantastic!!!

Also, totally looking forward to Beyond Two Souls as Heavy Rain is my favorite video game. I'm a first year MA student though, so it will be interesting to see how my binge-gaming behavior changes from undergrad to grad student.

Boyfriend is picking up GTA V this week, so that'll be a nice stress reliever, haha.

I don't have much interest in the GTA games myself, but yeah, my partner is picking a copy up on Tuesday and plans to play it every minute he can outside of work this week.

I still haven't finished Skyrim 🙁. Though I picked up a copy of Diablo 3 for the console. Even though I played it 3 times over on the computer. Have I gotten to play it... Nooooooo.

I am going to be in serious trouble when dragon age 4 (or whatever it's going to be called) comes out.

Add me to the list of people excited for GTA V 🙂

Mine too! He's being nice and going to a friend's place to play for the next two days so I can focus on internship essays in the evenings. 🙂

I'm so excited for the next Dragon Age! I think it will be called Inquisition.

I'm looking forward to it as well. While I liked the second one, I wasn't nearly as smitten by it as I was the first, so I'm hoping they go back toward the original's style of play. I also wonder if the Architect (I think that was his name...?) will be making a re-appearance in #3.

Hmm, maybe, although I killed him in the Awakening expansion pack, so not sure how that will play out. From what I've read, though, the third game's world will be large and will be very different depending on one's imports/ decisions put in pre-game.

I'm working through Borderlands w. my g/f. We bought the expansion packs too, so we have plenty of game left to do on it. 😀 I've heard Borderlands 2 is even better, so I'm stoked....though "The Last of Us" is probably going to be the next one on our list.

I've played a bit of original borderlands as well as 2. Incredible games. Hilarious. My family and I run around yelling "whatchoo waunt?!" all the time. I have not played last of us (we have too many consoles), but spouse has when there is no child in the room. Which isn't often. He really likes it. Great storyline. We are big Naughty Dog fans around here.

Sorry for the telegraph style typing, it's the iPad's fault.

I'm *really* enjoying The World Ends With You for the DS. The gameplay and the story are both incredibly inventive and enjoyable. Plus, I appreciate the fact that the characters actually swear at, lie to, and insult each other and are undeniably flawed but ultimately likable.
