I will be doing an away elective in boston and be going to MGH for some of the time and MClean for the other half.
I was wondering if someone had any good leads on cheap boston housing...or if some generous psych forum member had an extra room...for a reasonable price. I am checking craigslist like crazy...just a bit harder since i'm doing over phone and email though.

also...what do you think of the feasiblity of sleeping in my SUV! i can sleep in my car. shower and get ready at ballys/or the hospital. park in the parking lot of a 24hr place...at night.. and bring my bike/rollerblades for transportation.

and not to mention, save tons of money. anyone know the boston area? is it feasible? i'm getting all excited thinking about how adventurous it would be. i dont have to pack lite, bring some food, snacks, more clothes.. portable iron and plug it in my car. maybe even pay for hospital parking so that i can park in a secure lot during the nights? who knows? anysuggestinos on how to make it work. plus....
i can use computers in the hospital, do my reading at a local bookstore...where i would never get bored. sounds to good to be true

I knew a psychologist that lived in his Winnebago in a hospital parking lot. He showered at the gym.

He was a disgusting slob of a person and clinician, though.

Do yourself a favor and get a weekly rate hotel in the area.

I would not recommend sleeping in your SUV. It gets damn cold here and it is not safe. Have you contacted the surrounding medical schools to see if you can view their postings? I would think McLean would have something as well, since people do flow in and out of there fairly frequently.

From when to when are you coming? I'll look around. I might even know of a place for short term depending on when you'll be here. If you have any specific questions about location, feel free to contact me directly. PM me and I'll give you direct contact info.

By the way, congratulations on MGH and McLean. I hope you get a lot out of the experience.

That will backfire on ya big time. A better bet might be to take call every single night you there, claim you are a total gunner from Gunnerlandia. Of course, although this might fly in Ortho, Im doubting it will receive a similar reception in pysch. Although you could claim you are the first of a new breed of psych gunners!

Look for an Extended Stay Hotel in the area. You'll have to commute in from some suburb, but it certainly beats living in your SUV!

A youth hostel! I think there are some in B-town that are like 20 bucks a night. Hell you might even hook with a Euro hottie.

That's actually a good idea. I stayed at a hostel in Boston many years ago, and I believe there actually was a med student staying there. It's cheap, and you'll have a kitchen. Don't know about hooking up with the hottie, though -- the communal rooms might make that a bit inconvenient. 🙂

You'll also get to feel like you're roughing it, which seems to be what you're looking for.

I thought the Euro way was just to have sex wherever, even when other hostel guests are in the room with you...Dude, I say go for the hostel, that sounds like a fairly cool adventure. You can even drop the "rotating at Harvard medical school" for extra Babe-factor. Damn, Im a genius for having thought of that, dont say I never constructively contribute to your somewhat pitiful pysch forum!

Harvard Medical School has some availability in their student dorm Vanderbilt Hall. Parking in Boston is so expensive, it'd be cheaper just to buy a hotel room (seriously).

What service are you going to be on at MGH?
