Hey all, I'm a new 4th year

Due to schedulling issues my first Emergency Rotation is in October, is this real late in the game to gain a SLOR?

I'm hoping they would send out my letter withing the month so hopefully by november I would have a SLOR. what do you guys think, am I shooting myself in the foot?

Thanks in advance!

Even if they send out your letter by the end of October, it will take about 2-3 weeks before the letter is uploaded to ERAS and can be viewed by programs. So, I think you're looking at mid-late november when PDs can view your SLOR. If the rest of your application is solid, then you should be ok and should get your share of interviews. I know people that got quite a few interview requests in late november and in december and later. Eventhough you would not have an SLOR by Nov 1st, I don't think that they will question your dedication to EM as they will see that you are doing an EM elective in October and will assume that you will have an SLOR from that elective. Good luck.

thanks for reply,

It good to know, I am in good shape. I'm not going to really try to change my rotation schedule (not sure if I can). Anyway thanks again, and its good to know others have later EM rotations and have done fine...

I was told by some PDs that they don't worry about the letters so much in selecting for interviews, at least to first order. Just as long as the letters are there when it comes time for them to start their ranking.

On a related topic, are you set-up for any EM rotations away from your home school? I think that can be quite helpful for your application and for you to see EM in a different setting than your home school. Away slots are filling up fast, but there are still spots open in November and December. And many programs will let you take time off to interview, as long as you make it up later.

When you rotate tell the attending who is writing your SLOR to get it out ASAP in a nice way.

The SLOR is very easy to write. However, they ask for the grade in the clerkship. This will be your rate-limiting step. When your grade is finished they can do the SLOR easily in a day. The SLOR will get loaded electronically fairly quickly as well.

You do not need a completed SLOR in order to get an interview scheduled but many programs will wait to see the SLOR. The computer system has a way to put incomplete applications on hold, and they are constantly reviewed.

It would be in your best interest to move your rotation to September. If this can't be done, no problem, just make sure your SLOR writer is reliable and can get it in ASAP.
