i can't decide whether or not to ask the clerkship director to write an SLOR or not. I'm at the acting county hospital in what is probably the largest city without an EM residency program. It's a level 2, but should be a level 1 by the end of the year. however, EM residents do rotate through the dept because they get more trauma here than their home program. my scores and grades are good and won't keep me out of a resi. 30-40 students rotate here per year.

i know that clerkship directors can fill out the form, but it is obviously intended for directors at programs with residency. My question is, would an SLOR be preferred from this type of program even though the final question about "rank in your program" could not be answered?

I would prefer a SLOR from a residency program director, clerkship director or chair. But I would consider a letter fromyour institution.

Thanks for the reply. More questions. ERAS only allows 4 LORs. As of now, I have no SLOR. I have 2 EM letters, a great ENT letter, and an ortho letter. I have 2 away rotations scheduled, but the earliest i could possibly get a SLOR is late October.

questions:
1. Can I replace a letter, if i get the SLOR before Nov 1?

2.Will anyone read it if I can replace it?

3. Should I just submit 3 letters, if i can't replace it?

4.Also, does anyone really care about the letters that aren't from EM faculty?

5 .Would 3 EM letters be preferable, in light of no SLOR?

I'm pretty laid back when I'm not thinking about letters.......WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT!
