1) they have forced a regional interview upon me. yes, it'll save me some $, but if i am to seriously consider their school, i'm going to have to fly out there to visit anyhow.

2) they have taken the liberty to make an appointment for me on their time. they will not even budge an hour.

3) they end the letter with this:

P.S. If for any reason you do not wish to accept this invitation, please let me know immediately as there are many applicants in the Southern California area awaiting the opportunity of an interview.

...in other words...P.S. You are dispensable.

I'm wondering why I'm being forced upon this regional interview when in fact there have been plenty of So Cal applicants that have interviewed on campus? Is this their way of getting applicants for their waitlist so as to save us some money in case if we don't get in? i've been fortunate enough to have been accepted to a school i'd be very happy to attend already, so should i fall for this "ploy" of theirs, if in fact, it is a "ploy" for waitlistees. i don't like the smell of it...

Stop your Fuking whining, if you dont want it, then SLU is right there are plenty others waiting

look ram...it's not whining. it's called rooting out something that smells a lil' fishy (wait a minute, is that you?).

if you don't have answers to what i think are valid questions about their forced-upon regional interviews, then shut the fuk up.

in cases like this, i suggest u contact the director of admissions directly (if u haven't already done so). make ur case saying that u are really interested in SLU and want to see it first. say that it would be unreasonable to force u to do decide on a school blindly.

personally, i'd want to go to a regional interview any day--saves me couple of hundred in airline tix. i think it won't be that bad--if they've managed to put togeter a big regional interview in socal--u can expect a bunch of interviewers and interviewees like anywhere else.

You're right...this is "fishy"; since you have an acceptance to a school you're satisfied with, save yourself the trouble and be happy w/the acceptance you already have.😀 Hope this helps, and congrats on your acceptance (where, BTW?)!

Ramoray you are one of the biggest whiners on SDN. joe joe has a legitimate concern, and there is no need for your inferiority complex to dominate this thread. In fact, between this and your whining about genuinely concerned people posting their stats I am convinced you only come to SDN to insult everyone.

Really, take your inferiority complex elsewhere. Youre not helping anyone out here.

It is about time someone put him in his place... thanks Gleevec!

I think you should call and ask to speak to someone with some authority. Then see if you can come because you are genuinely interested in seeing the school and the city. If they say no, personally, I'm not sure I'd do the regional interview. SLU's interviews are out of control massive amounts of applicants all over the place. I was not impressed with the interview day at all there. I spent more time in a conference room with no windows talking to other applicants from all over the U.S. than to anyone even slightly related to SLU itself. If you're willing to spend the money to fly all the way to StL. for SLU they should be willing to at least give you a spot in a room of about 40 applicants. That's my opinion on that one.

Hey Joe Joe, I got the same mail too.................mines on Feb. 6 at 2pm........when is yours?? Yeah, sounds kinda like a second hand interview, if somehow I got excepted there and was interested in going, Id probably have to fly there and check it out anyways but I guess the good thing is I can save the money and if I end up getting waitlisted or something, Im not out 400 bucks. Does anyone really know the reason why med schools would do these "forced" regional interviews?? Seems like there would be a greater shot of someone actually going to their school if they interviewees actually toured the school etc..........or maybe they are just trying to save us money(doubt it)?

I think that it might be that the school is

a. trying to save you money
b. enhancing the liklihood of you attending

I would guess for many of you CA residents, going to a lower tier school in STL is not high on your list. I would guess they are tying to dazzle you with little financial commitment on your part.

I would suggest that this approach does not work well though. As several have mentioned, even if you loved the interview/interviewer, you still don't know much about the school.

I am sure you have decided on this by now, but if the interview is in the LA area, I don't see the harm of going. If you get in, you can always visit STL later, and if you don't you saved the money.

Maybe I am just jeolous because SLU is one of the lower tier schools that I actually want to go to, and I've heard NOTHING from them. Several other lower tier schools think that I am good enough to interview, why not SLU? Jerks.

JBJ--SLU is just notoriously slow. So don't worry, I'm sure you'll hear from them sometime. I think they interview pretty late into the year for spots.

wow! that's crazy. tell them to shove it up their...

seriously, i think you should call the admissions office as others suggested if you are truly interested in the school. i would not want to do a regional interview, particularly if i were already accepted into another school. it makes no sense to do one unless you are desperate to go there. if they don't offer an interview at the school, i say bail on the interview and give someone else the opportunity. university of vermont rocks 🙂

joejoe hoho,

you're above that shiznit. SLU isnt even that good. tell them to suck on your green mountain boy musket (vermont reference =D)

Hey joe joe. I just got back from SLU yesterday. You are pretty much in good shape. They don't offer the regional to all SoCal (or NorCal) applicants--only those who are extremely qualified. Case in point: the girl I stayed with was from SoCal & she was accepted after having a regional interview. if you are seriously considering the school, then make a great impression on your interviewer and I think you're in! Good Luck!

siempre: thanks for your take on your interview experience on-site. it definitely dissuades me from wanting to go there only to find chaos.

jet: they scheduled me for the 7th. g'luck to you.

JBJ: what are your reasons for wanting to go to SLU? i hope i'm not missing some info that i should know about...

lola: how'd your interview at uvm go?

blitz: sometimes my alpha male personality gets the best of me and i can't be above 'ish like that. =)

applejuice: hope your interview went well! it's good to know that people DO get accepted after a regional interview and i'm not wasting my time for a waitlist spot only.

thanks for the input everyone!

Hi,
I called SLU and they said they only schedule a regional interview when an adcom member is going to be in the area. It has nothing to do with the quality of the applicant. Good luck with your interview joe..............just one question why would you waste your time going to interviews when you have already been accepted to a place you are happy with.....just wondering. Good luck.

Not sure if a non-admissions officer gave you this info, but I was told that SOME people are offered the regional and others who may be in the same region are not. In either case there is not a choice/preference of interview site given in the case of SLU. This leads me to think that the quality of the applicant is factored into the decision.

Meaning more qualified or less qualified if you get a regional interview??

Jetson

I was offered a regional interview about a couple months ago. Due to scheduling conflicts with another interview, I called SLU to reschedule and they were more than happy to give me an interview on the campus. I think that if you prefer this, I do not see the harm in calling and requesting one. Good luck and I hope this helps.

I had the same thing happen to me last year -- assigned a regional interview in Seattle. I was happy to combine it with a trip to other west coast schools I was interviewing at (don't ask me how, the dates just happned to work out). I ended up getting an acceptance from them. I wouldn't try to read too much into it. Just call and reschedule for on-campus if you would really consider going there over the school where you're already accepted, and you don't want to have to make a trip out to St. Louis later to decide.
