SLU vs MSU-COM

hi, i'm new to SDN, but have been reading posts for awhile.
i was accepted this cycle to both SLU and MSU-COM and have been deliberating between the schools for awhile. even though SLU has better ranking overall, MSU has great primary care which is really attractive for me.

i guess i'm just interested in seeing what people's opinions are in terms of these two schools?

any information or advice would be much appreciated!! =) thanks! 🙂

There is no such thing as 'great primary care'. No school is going to hurt your chances of matching into Family Medicine if you want to do it....

but it seems like a more peaceful campus. anyone know what it's like to live around there? i heard detroit is not great... and MSU is close to detroit?

Wow, MSU-COM accepted a non-resident. How'd you do that?

I believe MSU-COM offers scholarships to OOS matriculants to keep their tuition compariable to instate, but I'm not sure about international students.

I don't think any school in this country wouldn't give you a great education to become a primary care physician. I think the biggest factor after cost for me would be the location. I prefer MO to MI, but that's just me.

If you change your mind about what specialty to choose, SLU will give you an edge in the allopathic residencies (b/c it's an allopathic school) but MSU will let you apply for both MD and DO residencies. And most of the "competitive" DO specialities (esp DO ortho and DO rads) are HUGE HUGE HUGE at MSU. The programs up there especially like to take their own. Closing a few doors in the allopathic residencies might just be worth it in this case.

E. Lansing is far away from Detroit, the DMC is downtown and the Macomb campus is in metro-detroit but not the city itself.


Also, I don't think MSU is going to give you any kind of edge in becoming a PCP (which you can do easily from anywhere).

Do you want to go back to Canada after medical school? If you can't practice fully with the D.O. (offered by MSU-COM), you might want to get the M.D. from SLU. A quick look at the wikipedia entry for D.O. shows that there are some provinces in Canada that have restricted licensure for D.O.s.

I don't have the numbers, but I think a large percentage (50%?) of OOS students get a tuition waiver so they actually pay in-state tuition. Sadly, in-state tuition is still pricey--roughly 34,000.

OP said COM though, which is DO. MSU CHM is the MD school.

College Of Medicine or College of Osteopathic Medicine.. The Op needs to specify.
If its MSU-DO then he's much better off at SLU. If it's MD he's probably still better off at SLU....

my mistake in typing! it's the MD program, which is MSU-CHM
i'm pretty much open at this point to staying in US or coming back to Canada, it might just depend on visa status?
one major downside to MSU is that you don't get to cut in anatomy, but then students have said that they get to see more variety from pro-sections, and if you really wanted, you can take an ANA elective in the end of first year that does allow you to to dissect.

I don't think it's very important. Mostly it just uses up masses of time.

....unless, of course, you'd like to attend a medical school with strong support for primary care, with an administration/faculty/student body that won't make you feel isolated and ***tty because that's what you want to do.

rankings don't mean much, and they don't mean anything for primary care. select your school based on other things: location and quality/structure of 3rd year clerkships are the two biggies. oh, and money 🙄

SLU all the way... Bit of family home town bias but not as cold and the people are awesome.... If I had to pick between the two SLU all the way.

lol, i love detroit. but no, none of the MSU CHM campuses are near detroit. they are far from detroit.. and they are in hick/country areas of michigan. and yes there are sheep...

i would pick MSU because it is a great school, but mainly because of location.. it's much closer to toronto (4-5 hours drive) so you can save money going back home to visit.
