Does the invite come in a thin envelope or something else? My mom called and left a message on the phone that I have a letter from SLU, should she open it, but it's too late to call back! It's killing me! What could it be?!?!

My SLU invite came in a thin envelope, so you could be in luck.

By the way, I interviewed at SLU on 9/23 and I'm eagerly awaiting notification from the committee. Has anyone heard when SLU tends to send out letters of acceptance? I think I'll give them a call.

Hey, I interviewed there on 9/23, too. Neato.

I was told we would hear some time in October.

ahhhh, and it's my first interview invite!

I remember you Sooner. Weren't you the only other person taking photographs? I really liked the school, so I would be happy to go there. I hope we hear good news this month.

Yep, that was me. If you knew who I was, why didn't you say anything?!? Who were you?

I interviewed at slo on 9/30. Very impressive. question for those who have already interviewedt there... how was the interview? I was absolutely grilled about different parts of my application/history. Very different from the other interviews ive been through. I thought it went well... but the Dr. who interviewed me really knew the weaknesses in my application and pinned me down for explanations. anybody with the same experiences there?

Sooner. I didn't know at the time of the interview. But I remembered meeting a guy from Oklahoma, so I figured it was you. We were the only ones taking pictures. I'm the guy who brought the disposable camera. We sat next to each other in the conference room before the tour.

Good luck guys! I'm a MS1 at SLU, and I really like it so far.

i'm lovin' it as well.

glad i made the decision i did 🙂

we do have a cool class though. and the ceremony today was cool.

Was cost an issue for you or your classmates? I would be looking at $200,000+ debt going to SLU but from everyone I talked to they said its no big deal. I really liked to school during my interview. Thanks.

it depends on how much you like it- i really did like it better than my other 2 or 3 options. it was more expensive than my state school by ... maybe 50 g's over 4 years...

in the end, you think to yourself- how long will you truly spend paying off your loans? well, it depends a lot on your speciality- if you go into family practicice or a primary care field, so you'll have to live a few years not so high on the rocks- if you go into a speciality, the extra 50g (maybe 100 after all the crap like taxes, interest, etc) really won't take but a fraction of a year (and longer if you do it in installments). this info. i know from personal experience, family, etc.

so- in the end, it's your life and 4 years is a LOT. it's a significant portion of your life, so if you like SLU, go to SLU- i really love it here, the teachers are great, even though i'm not catholic, the Father here offers GREAT support, the residency placement is spectacular, and you do your 4th year rotations wherever you want to which is cool (lots of people go back to california).

some things I don't like- there are a couple profs that i sometimes ponder why they are there... other profs I can't imagine being any better than they are... so it's a mix and mesh of stuff... the clinical facilities are GREAT and the clinical training is just spectacular. also, if you are applying this year, you might get to take advantage of the new 100 millin dollar research building that they are constructing, which not only will provide so many opportunities for those interested in research, but will really boost the school's usnews ranking (i know- nobody give a '****' right? but the truth is, to an extent we all do..whatever though).

in any case, PM me if you have questions

peace out.

chocolateshake,

I wish I was interviewing on monday, but unfortunately the next open date wasn't until November 18th. So you'll have to fill me in after your interview 😉

Good luck on Monday!

P.S. Moops-Thanks for the info

Did anyone interview with Dr. Willmore (the Dean of Admissions)? My interview is coming up soon and I am scheduled to meet with him... any advice?

I agree with moops and polargirl. I am really enjoying it and I am confident that I am getting a good education. Cost of living is low here. Money was an issue for me, but in the long run, all the doctors that I know in varrying fields from pathology to ortho surgery ( I know three that are SLU alums), all say that your loans will get paid. I am looking at 250,000 in loans but only because I have a wife and son so I take the full amount offered. Good luck!!
Feel free to PM if you have any questions.

I am going to be interviewing with Dr. Shoemaker....any advice??

jdg222,
I'll tell you how my interview went 🙂

i interviewed w/doc shoemaker actually- it was a 10 minute interview where he started out with, "i'm hoping you come here" or something- but, the few moments we did talk, he enjoyed talking about his research, which was cool- so if you have done research, have something ready to say about it (maybe something interesting, at that! 🙂 heh)..

doctor willmore is a great guy, neurologist (in case you have done research) and he's actually best friends with the dean of wash u med school as well, who is also a neurologist. i heard he came to stl cuz his friend was (wash u med dean dodson)... but yeah... my 2 cents..

PEACE.

Anyone have any advice for interviewing with Dr. Richard Lee? I'm interviewing at SLU on oct 27

I interviewed with Dr. Willmore. Nice man, interesting to talk to. I dont know if my interview experience with him is typical for him because I have an unusual application... but I would say be ready to discuss the details of your app. He knew a lot about me and asked very pointed questions with followups... no avoiding. He was a very straight shooter and pulled no punches.

One funny thing... In the seat you will sit in for the interview, if you look left there is a file cabinet behind an open french door. On the side of the cabinet is a photocopied slu app...the pic was a mug shot photo of a guy holding a sign saying pick me. funny. plus there are reviews of interviews... the one on top the day I was there started with "Mr X was a friendly young man from X college. However, talking to him reminded me of TALKING TO MY GRANDSON...ouch.

good luck.

moops,
your interview with dr. shoemaker was only 10 mins long? aren't the interviews supposed to be 45-60 mins long? hmm...

it was maybe 20, i shouldh't have said that... i think they had decided to accept me beforehand, barring any extenuating circumstances, which is why some select interviews are not so long. sorry- that was not a necessary reflection of a normal interview, i just wanted to give what little (the research discussion) i experienced with the whole interview thing for doc. shoemaker... just that he does biochemistry research i think? so- if you have done research, have something interesting to say maybe because he'll help you...

anyways- if you have any other questions, feel free to ask me. now i'm gonna wash the guts off my body in the shower. mmm good eh?

peace

hey everyone, congrats on the interviews! i wanted to know how long it took for you all to get an invite from SLU after your file was complete (complete secondary, letters of rec, etc.)? thanks!

we got our last anatomy test this saturday. isn't that cool- one block of anatomy and then no more dissections until all of us going into surgery come back our fourth year before residencies to make sure we are 'anatomically competent.." i stray... good luck for all those of us taking tests, we will surely kick ass.

hizzle fo' shizzle. what the hell happened to snoop dizzle televizzle? i haven't seen that shizzle on my vizzle for at least a dizzle. the hell happened to that ****? used to get me through a shizzy (****ty) afternoon..

peace.

good luck to you as well.

Dr. Lee in the OR is a very focused individual. He's accomplished quite alot at a young age. He's pretty helpful if you are planning a career in surgery, great guy. Come prepared and organized, he's really helpful.

Maybe we'll be hearing from SLU soon.....?

Dr. Shoemaker is pretty smart, so much information he seems scatterbrained. Dr. Sly (who discovered "sly's disease" which is basically a mitochondrial enzyme deficiency) and Dr. Shoemaker were featured on unsolved mysteries about 10 years ago. They're work help solve a mystery of a women who was wrongfully convicted of murdering her infant. The disease turned out to be biochemical. Anyways, during that part of the biochem lecture first year, Sly and Shoemaker show clips from the episode. It's awesome, try to find it!
