I know the easy answer is going to be "do research in something you are interested in." But if a medical student just wants to get involved with research for the experience (M1, M1/M2 summer or M2), is it smart to pursue it in a competitive residency such as ortho, derm, uro, etc?

My thought is that once on clerkships begin, you will figure out what you want to do. If you develop an interest in one of these competitive ones you did research in, great you already have part of your CV built. If you find an interest in a specialty that is less competitive, at least you still have research experience that should still be okay.

Is my thought process correct on this? Asking as a naive pre-M1.

Yes, I'd say that's pretty spot on. But still be interested in it!

In general, yes you should do research in the more competitive field. I would even look further into potentially doing research in fields that can translate to multiple disciplines (eg. thyroid/endocrine research can be related to ENT/IM/Gen Surg).

Thanks for the reply both of you! Great idea looking into research that would be multidisciplinary. I'll have to look around at the opportunities offered at my school.
